Transcript of AP World History Survival Guide

Intro to class
The objective to AP World History is to prepare you for
future AP courses and to learn college level world history
material. Students should be able to identify the following themes:
Interaction Between Humans and the Environment
Development and Interaction of Cultures
State-Building, Expansion, and Conflict
Creation, Expansion, and Interaction of Economic Systems
Development and Transformation of Social Structures
The 6 periods that you will read and learn about:
Period 1: Technological and Environmental Transformations, to c. 600 B.C.E.
Period 2: Organization and Reorganization of Human Societies, c. 600 B.C.E. to c. 600 C.E.
Period 3: Regional and Transregional Interactions, c. 600 C.E. to c. 1450
Period 4: Global Interactions, c. 1450 to c. 1750
Period 5: Industrialization and Global Integration, c. 1750 to c. 1900
Period 6: Accelerating Global Change and Realignments, c. 1900
to the Present
The overall knowledge of these periods and themes will
help you to be successful in this class.
Study Habits/Tests
The first couple of times I studied for the tests, it did not pay off in the end. I made bad grades on the tests but that should have motivated me to study harder and in new ways. These times I had my notes, text book, the teacher's notes online, and my 5 steps to a 5 book all laid out in front of me and I went back and forth through each, reading material from the chapter. Ultimately, this just stressed me out and confused me because the content in each were a little different and I wasn't sure WHAT I needed to study for. For vocabulary or dates you need to know, I would highly suggest flashcards. Flashcards are always a good way to study and help memorization.
Prior Preparation
Personally, I probably was not as prepared as I could have been. I did read the teacher suggested book "The Road" over the summer, and although it was a great book, it did not prepare me for AP World History. I am still not quite sure to how someone could prepare oneself for this class, but definitely go into it with an open mind, ready to work hard, and READ A LOT. I highly suggest making an investment in the 5 Steps to a 5 book and actually read it and do the activities. This will most-likely help you in class and should prepare you for and help you pass the AP test.
Expectations
Some expectations that a new student should have would definitely know that this is not an honors class and you will have to work so much harder for an A. They need to expect a ton of work, plus reading, and need to do the work and reading if they plan on pursuing a good grade. I am a straight A student and thought that I could breeze through the class like any other honors class and manage an A, but that was not the case. My expectations were not realistic, considering it was a college level course and therefore were not fulfilled. I should still average out to a high B which is not bad because it is an AP class, but now I have that bit of regret because I was not successful in reaching my goal.
Classwork
The class work we received was a lot of busy work and analyzing. The analytical part of the work we received was probably the hardest part because we were not used to analyzing EVERYTHING. Most of the classwork was helpful to the class because it was an easier grade, but not all of it helped with the AP exam. It was nice being able to ask for help due to the fact you were in the classroom but a lot of it was small details you ended up not needing to know on the AP exam (which seemed to me, to be overall ideas.)
Homework
To be honest, most of the time the homework was confusing and I was not sure how to do it. Before you give up on the idea of it though (because it will only drag your grade down in class, if you don't do it) use your resources such as your book and the internet or your friends! A lot of the time if I did not understand the homework one of my peers would know what to do and could explain it (make sure you have plenty of classmate's phone numbers!) At the end of the year, a lot of dates and regions quizzes were assigned and given, I personally think that these assignments were not helpful to me. The essays however that were assigned for homework DID help me with the AP exam (although they didn't help me pass the class, I got bad grades on the essays.) After writing a certain type of essay a few times, you understand HOW to write it and then need to master the content of the essays.

Student's Responsibilities
You should expect to devote at least an hour a night for the days you have AP World on. When you do not have homework or reading (which is very rare) you can take a break but you may want to study for at least 10 minutes. On nights when you have to read a chapter, depending on how fast of a reader you are and how long the chapter is, you should probably expect devoting 2 hours of your time. The main thing is that the teacher can only lecture and teach so much, history is not the easiest subject to "teach" so the student should take full responsibility in learning the material and reading their book. If you do this, you can be very successful in the class and on your AP exam.
Resources
I would definitely have to say google helped a TON. The internet will probably be your most used resource. But from the start, you should probably get used to using the book as your top resource and just get to know the book. This will help you throughout the year. Another great resource is using crash course! John Green's 10 minute lessons about world history actually taught me a lot more then I had taken in during class. Honestly, watch as many world history crash courses you can!
Personal Statement
My weaknesses were that I did not continue to read the book throughout the year. Reading could have prepared me further more for the AP exam and helped me on the tests. I did not have many strengths in this class. I paid attention during class, which is important, but I did not sustain my responsibilities out of class due to frustration. I strongly suggest reading your book throughout the whole year, make it your goal, and try to really understand the material you're reading (as in do not let it go in one ear out the other- you have complete control over that.)
