The message Food, Inc. is trying to send to you
Food, Inc. is trying to say that agribusiness produces food that is unhealthy, and that it is environmentally harmful and abusive of both animals and employees.
Food, Inc would like you to ask yourself these questions:
Do you know what's in the food you eat?
Do you know what had to happen for this food to be made?
Do you think this is OKAY?
A permanent move to a new location
The raising of animals or the growing of crops on tended land to obtain food for primary consumption by a farmer's family or for sale off the farm
Green Revolution vs. Organic Agriculture
The Green Revolution, also called the Third Industrial Revolution, introduced GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms), which were seen throughout the film. One example are Monsanto's "roundup ready" soybeans, which are a brand of glyphosate-resistant soybeans. Genetically Modified Organisms are a way to increase crop production and make more money for the company. Another example of genetically modified foods is Tyson's genetically modified chicken. They insert genes that make the chicken grow larger in a much faster time than normal.
Organic agriculture is when farmers grow plants without using green technology. We saw this during Food, Inc. when a farmer showed his completely organic farm. He grew all his animals naturally and didn't use any genetic modifications.
Food, Inc. talked about the exploitation of undocumented migrant workers, and how American consumers benefit from the ranks of immigrants who work in the fields and factories. We saw footage of immigrants working in factories late at night.
The reason these companies choose to employ these workers is because they will work for pitiful wages just to get a job.
However, when these migrant workers are caught and forced to migrate back to their home country (deported) the companies are not penalized. New workers arrive just as fast as the old ones leave. Sometimes, the government shows up at these unfortunate worker's homes late at night just to deport them!
Commercial agriculture is the farming of products for sale off the farm. In Food, Inc. we see animals and plants that are domesticated to sell in the market. However, some companies, such as Tyson, treat the animals they are raising for harvest with poor conditions. The chickens in Tyson chicken farms live in cramped, unsanitary coops with no light. Some chickens even die from disease and have to be cleaned up by the workers.

The Cost of Food
As we watched this movie during class, we saw many examples of human geography being reflected such as agriculture, migration, and industry/services. This movie helps us understand what exactly is in the foods we are eating and how these foods are produced.
While some farmers used genetically modified organisms (as mentioned in "Agriculture") to produce more crops with genes that increased crop production, they were faced with the owner of that seed. Monsanto owns a patent for the "round up ready" soybeans, and there is a strict agreement that specifically states that the grower will not save or sell the seeds from their harvest for further planting, breeding or cultivation. Monsanto files suit against farmers who breach their contracts and infringe their patents. Many of these farmers are forced to settle their statements because they do not have the financial resources to go up against a large corporation in a lawsuit. Monsanto is one of many seed companies that patent their innovations.
As we watched Food Inc., we noticed as the chickens were being farmed and harvested for sale on the market that they were using a Fordist production. A Fordist production is a highly organized and specialized system for organizing industrial production and labor. It is named after automobile producer Henry Ford, and features assembly-line production of standardized components for mass consumption.
The Cost of Foods
Food, Inc. showed how the difference between organic and genetically modified foods varied the cost of the food product when being sold on the market. The movie showed a small Latino family that ate more fast food than the healthier options at a grocery store because it cost less. Because foods are considered "organic" it increases the cost of production and that therefore increases the cost of the food on the market.
