Transcript of Analogy of a Cell Project

Comparing a Cell to a Restaurant Ribosomes produce proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum. The endoplasmic reticulum is where proteins and lipids are synthesized. It also detoxifies harmful substances in the liver. The rough ER is where ribosomes are attached. Lysosomes break down and digest excess materials using digestive enzymes. Animal Cell The plasma membrane contains tunnels that let substances enter and leave the cell. The cytoskeleton is made of proteins and helps to support the cell. (The "framework" of the cell). The kitchen area is like the endoplasmic reticulum because it is where all the different ingredients are blended together to make the meals. Plant Cell Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum To-go boxes are like the golgi apparatus in the cell because the food is packaged up and put in boxes to take outside the restaurant to the customer's home. Protein is similar to the cashflow of the business because the money earned from customers keeps the restaurant running and in business. The nucleus is the control center of the cell that contains coded directions for production of proteins and cell division . Nucleus Vacuoles temporarily store waste and extra, unneeded materials. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosomes Chloroplasts capture light energy and convert it into chemical energy to fuel the cell. Plasma Membrane The cell wall is a barrier that protects and supports plant cells. The golgi apparatus packages and modifies proteins, then releases them outside of the cell. The mitochondria generates energy and makes it available to the rest of the cell. The cell wall can be compared to the actual building itself because the outer walls give the restaurant its shape and protect the customers from outside weather. The garbage disposal can be compared to lysosomes because it breaks down food, shells, and peels using sharp blades to grind up the food. Chloroplasts are like advertisements for the business because they capture customers' attention and bring them to the restaurant. The customers pay money to be served, which contributes to the cashflow of the restaurant. The kitchen workers/chefs are like the mitochondria in cells because they make food for the whole restaurant. The plasma membrane is like the doors and hallways inside of the restaurant because they allow customers to move throughout the restaurant, and also to enter and to exit. The pantry and the refrigerator can both be compared to the cytoskeleton. They are full of food and they support and keep the business going by providing food for customers. The lysosomes break down and digest excess materials using digestive enzymes. Lysosomes A vacuole is like the dumpster behind a restaurant because it stores trash and extra, unneeded food temporarily until the garbage truck comes and picks it up. The nucleus of the cell can be compared to the manager's office because it is the control center of the restaurant. The manager gives instructions on how the restaurant should be run. Kitchen appliances like ovens, stoves, pots and pans, etc.. are similar to ribosomes because they produce food in the kitchen for the customers. To-go boxes are like the golgi apparatus because they package leftover food for the customers to bring to their homes away from the restaurant. Chloroplasts are like advertisements for the restaurant because they capture customers' attention and draw them to the restaurant where they pay to be served. This supports the cashflow and "fuels" the business. The kitchen area is similar to the endoplasmic reticulum because it is where all the different ingredients are blended together to produce meals. Protein fuels and gives energy to the cell. The profit is similar to the protein because it keeps the business up and running (cashflow). Cell Wall Office Wait
