WELCOME TO SKK SMK CONVENT, TAIPING MATANG MANGROVE FOREST RESERVE, KUALA SEPETANG The Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve in Kuala Sepetang, just 15km away from Taiping, is the largest mangrove reserve in Malaysia (over 40,000 hectares in size) established since 1902. About 80 percent of it is used for coal production under sustainable harvest policies, while the remainder is completely protected for biodiversity preservation. Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve has been gazetted as a Permanent Forest Reserve in 1906. It is not only renowned as the most successfully managed Mangrove Forest in Malaysia but also amongst the best managed mangrove ecosystem in the world. There are also rich breeding grounds for small marine creatures from jellyfish to fiddler crabs, mudskippers and archer fish, meaning plenty of food for larger animals – including rare marine otters and river dolphins. An interesting fact about mangroves is that, they are lifesavers! How so? Well, they protect the shoreline from eroding, thus preventing as much from tsunamis and as well as stopovers for certain migratory birds! MUDSKIPPER FIDDLER CRAB STORKBILL KINGFISHER BRAHMINY KITE In the night, there would be boat rides available along the river to allow visitors to catch a glimpse of ‘kelip-kelip’, none other than your fireflies! FIREFLIES There are also large kilns within the forest reserve that allow visitors to observe the production of charcoal from the combustion of freshly harvested mangrove trees! Visit the charcoal processing sites with their unique and traditional method of charcoal making.
