Transcript of Digital Citizenship/Digital Footprint

Thought What is the equivalent from your time as a youth to what kids are doing today? (Facebook, texting, Twitter, etc.) Kids are Creators Digital Citizenship/Digital Footprints It’s all about participating; communicating; making music, images, and videos; and posting written content. And the content that’s there? Kids must be able to know whether it’s credible or not. Change in Audience Everything happens in front of a vast, invisible, and often anonymous audience. Editability Information cannot be controlled. Anything can be copied, changed, and shared instantly. Permanence Once something is out there, it lasts for a long time. Everything leaves a digital footprint. Actions v. Consequences Distance and anonymity separate actions and consequences. Kids think they can get away with unethical or unacceptable behavior because they don’t see immediate consequences. What does that mean for schools? Kids are not generally being taught how to use these tools at home - all too often because parents do not know how to use them either. Schools need to teach appropriate use of these tools. Kids are seeing negative and inappropriate uses of technology all over the place. Awareness School campaign
