Transcript of Hekla

The Amazing Volcano Hekla Formation Volcanic Activity Features Other Cool Facts Right now Hekla is a dormant volcano. Its last eruption was in 2000. The last 4 eruptions happened about every 10 years. The last eruption was not explosive. There was not a pyroclastic flow. Hekla produces basaltic andesite lava. Even though Hekla is dormant it is Iceland's most active volcano. During the middle ages, Icelanders called Hekla the "Gateway to Hell". Scientists think that the longer Hekla stays dormant, the more catastrophic the next eruption will be. Hekla is located at 63.98°N and 19.70°W. Hekla is located along a mid-ocean ridge which is a divergent plate boundary. It is not located anywhere near the Ring of Fire. The mid-ocean ridge is where magma is coming out onto the surface. The magma makes a mound and then there is a volcano.
