Teach Up Align Down “Unwrapping” the Content and Skills 1 “PLUS” “PLUS” Example of the “Spiral Effect” 2 As students move along the plane of a particular learning trajectory they study the same expectation each year at ever increasing increments of complexity and sophistication. The “Spiral Effect” metaphor relates to the ascending level of difficulty embedded in the content of each succeeding grade-specific standards as it approaches the CCR Anchor Standard. 3 www.ncpublicschools.org Digging Deep Most important! The focus standard is the goal for the day’s class. Our lesson, then, is geared to meet the standard. By the end of the class, we should be able to say, “Yes, the students CAN,” or “No, they CANNOT.”

It is derived from the Common Core/Essential Standards. HOWEVER, it is NOT to be taken word-for-word from them. You will have to create workable, meaningful (to your students) focus standards. The Focus Standard Example:

I can use context clues to demonstrate comprehension of vocabulary by defining 10 words within text . WRITING A FOCUS STANDARD “I CAN” statements

When writing an “I Can” statement be sure to remember the ABCD of focus standards.

B- Behavior
C- Content
D- Degree Revised Bloom’s Verbs We must remember a concept before we can understand it.

We must be able to apply a concept before we analyze it.
We must have analyzed a concept before we can evaluate it.
