Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder characterized by extreme sleepiness during the day, often accompanied by instances in which the patient totally falls asleep at very inappropriate times such as driving or sex. Symptoms:

The sleep cycle of people with narcolepsy is EXTREMELY disturbed.
Most people experience REM sleep after 30 minutes of sleeping, while narcoleptics experience this within 10 minutes of falling asleep. Sleep pattern of normal people And what causes that? That thing!
...or lack thereof. People with narcolepsy have a lesser concentration of this neurons that produce this protein, orexin. Orexin This protein regulates wakefulness by integrating metabolic, circadian, and sleep debt systems to basically determine whether we should be awake or sleepy.
Orexinigenic neurons regulate release of noradrenaline, dopamine, and acetylcholine, while also indirectly affecting 5-HT(1a) receptors. This was discovered after the gene controlling orexin was knocked out in mice, and the mice showed signs of narcolepsy. Treatment With the discovery of the association between orexin and narcolepsy, many drugs have been found to alleviate symptoms. Tricyclic antidepressants such as clomipramine work by blocking serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine transporters. (Reduces re-uptake)
