Historical Context Prezi
Throughout this Prezi,
The Devil in the White City
will reveal its connections to the historical events that made this book the thriller that it has become and show why the World's Fair was one of the biggest events in American history.
Facts of the World's Fair
The World's Fair was no easy task for Daniel Burnham, the Fair's leading architect. Burnham had to accommodate the Fair for its 26 million visitors and had to top the World's Fair in France. With the help of many of the world's top architects, Burnham would make his dream a reality.
The Center of Attention
Since Chicago has the task of outdoing the World's Fair in Paris, the architects had to create a highlight of the Fair that would match the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Finally, a bridge builder from Pittsburgh, George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. created the worlds first Ferris wheel at a height of 264 feet that could hold 2,160 people at a time.
The Crisis
The creation of the World's Fair was much more difficult then the architects could have foreseen. An economic collapse caused the stock exchange to fall, leading to the worst economic downfall America had seen at that time. The depression fell right into the opening of the Fair and caused major problems because people from around America weren't able to visit the Fair and proper revenue was lost.
A "Killer" Problem
Due to the extreme amount of people that would flock to Chicago, a large amount of "bad" people would be visiting too whose intentions were much worse. One of the main men behind the fraud and death in Chicago was Dr. H.H Holmes who used the Fair to lure women into his living quaters and kill them just after they signed a life insurance policy to Holmes.
About the Novel
The Devil in the White City
is a novel describing the creation of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and the marvels that the Fair had created and the problems that the architects faced. Yet with all the marvels of the vast city, there still lurked the serial killer of the Fair, Dr. H.H Holmes.
“I was born with the devil in me,' [Holmes] wrote. 'I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than the poet can help the inspiration to sing.”
