Two Characters
GOAL!
Creating Characters and Descriptions
The writing section of the exam is worth half of the marks for the whole paper.

You will find it very difficult to revise for this section.

So what we will do is work on creating little stand-alone descriptions and characters that can be put into any writing question.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card (page 10):
"Ender did not see Peter as the beautiful ten-year-old boy that grown-ups saw, with dark, tousled hair and a face that could have belonged to Alexander the Great. Ender looked at Peter only to detect anger or boredom, the dangerous moods that almost always led to pain."
Boneshaker by Cherie Priest (page 22):
"Without the coat, her body had a lean look to it — as if she worked too long, and ate too little or too poorly. Her gloves and tall brown boots were caked with the filth of the plant, and she was wearing pants like a man. Her long, dark hair was piled up and back, but two shifts of labor had picked it apart and heavy strands had scattered, escaping the combs she'd used to hold it all aloft."
The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman (page 12):
"Lord Asriel was a tall man with powerful shoulders, a fierce dark face, and eyes that seemed to flash and glitter with savage laughter. It was a face to be dominated by, or to fight: never a face to patronize or pity. All his movements were large and perfectly balanced, like those of a wild animal, and when he appeared in a room like this, he seemed a wild animal held in a cage too small for it."
He was a rich man: banker, merchant, manufacturer, and what not. A big, loud man, with a stare, and a metallic laugh. A man made out of coarse material, which seemed to have been stretched to make so much of him… A man who was always proclaiming, through that brassy speaking-trumpet of a voice of his, his old ignorance and his old poverty. A man who was the Bully of humility.’ (p. 18)

Across the road and huddled in a damp doorway is where he first caught my eye, but something told me that I would have noticed him across an immeasurable distance.
His hair was long and hung down his front like seaweed caught in a thrashing tide.
From deep within this
matted mane
of filth, his piercing eyes burned like a
forest fire
, devouring everything around them.

Standing up, he was an ancient statue unfurling and creaking into life, dust and debris falling from him in clouds. His face twitched, his body shivered and his fingers seemed to curl in pain, but, despite all of this, he demanded the attention of everyone around him. The buildings themselves craned their necks to better see his slight figure.
