Author's Purpose Someone that creates written work Why you do something. Your aim or goal. What you want to happen. Author's Purpose tells us the reason the author wrote the selection. Now that we know what Author's Purpose means lets take a look at some written work and see if we can determine the reason why the author wrote it. In Tarpon Springs, Florida there are people who work underwater. These people are called sponge divers. The kind of treasure they look for is called sponges. Sponge diving is not an easy job. The diver has to breathe under the water, and be careful of extreme water pressure. Author's write to persuade, inform, express an emotion or entertain. Persuade Inform Entertain means to do something for enjoyment, fun or amusement. means to convince someone to do or believe something. means to provide information. Cartoons are written for entertainment. Commercials try to persuade you to do many things: vote, buy, visit. Can you think of something you have read that was written to entertain?
