American and German Timeline By: Samantha Abel Stock Market Crash The stock market crash happened on Black Tuesday, which was October 29, 1929. The stock market crash lead to the Great Depression. On Black Tuesday when the stock market crashed, companies stocks went down and people quickly tried to trade their stocks. This started the worst economical era known in American history. Bank Rush The Bank Rush was when the stock market crashed and American people didn't trust banks to keep their money safe. People rushed to the local banks to take out their money immediately. But, people often went bankrupt because the banks didn't have their money on hand when people wanted to with draw all of their money. First Inauguration of FDR On March 4, 1933 the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt was sworn into office. The inauguration began Roosevelt's first four years in office, with the well-known quote, "the only thing we have to fear is... fear itself." FDR Supreme Court Packing President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Supreme Court Packing Plan was also known as the Judiciary Reorganization Bill of 1937. The Supreme Court Packing Plan was part of FDR's New Deal in order to get the US out of dept and depression. The Judiciary Reorganization Bill of 1937, let FDR appoint a new Supreme Court member that is over the age of 70. The Bill went under review, and in August the passed a revised version of the Bill. Third Inauguration of FDR FDR was inaugurated into office for a third time on January 20,1941. He was the only president to be in office for three, four year terms. The 22th Amendment was added to the US Constitution in March 21, 1947 and this Amendment prevented any US president from being president for more than two terms, making FDR the first and last President to serve three terms. Wizard of Oz Release The original Wizard of Oz was on July 25, 1939; during the Golden Ages of Hollywood. It made history during a time of struggle in the US by representing hard times in America, but still giving people hope for a brighter future at the same time with songs like "Somewhere over the Rainbow". People went to theaters to escape the troubles of time and the Wizard of Oz provided a great escape and promise for American people. Entry into WWIII Hitler Elected Chancellor Neville Chamberlain "Peace for our time" Invasion of Poland Anne Frank Family Flees Germany The Night of the Broken Glass Adolf Hitler became the leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party in 1933. He also supported the Nazi Party and became chancellor on January 30, 1933. Hitler becoming chancellor marked a turning point, not only for Germany, but for the world. Enactment of the Nuremberg Laws The Nuremberg Laws were laws that began removing Jews from German society and isolating them. The Nuremberg Laws issued on September 15, 1935 didn't let Jewish homes have maids under the age of 45, prohibited non-Jewish German from marrying a Jew. The Nuremberg Laws discriminated again Jewish people because of their blood-line and their beliefs. A union between Germany and Austria had been forbid due to the Versallies treaty, but that did not stop Hitler from taking back what he thought was his as well as his hometown. On March 12, 1938 Hitler and Austria unified. The Austria and German unification began the reign of Hitler and was the first country captured my Nazi. When war broke out in Europe it threatened US security. For a little we tried to help the Europeans without being directly involved with the war. But then the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and Hitler declared war on the US. Pearl Harbor being bombed is what lead the US to WWII. Austria Germany Unification of Austria and Germany = German Events = American Events On September 30, 1938 British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, spoke the phrase "peace for our time". He said this at a speech in the UK after signing a non-aggression pact with Germany. Neville Chamberlain believed that this agreement meant peace for our time and peace for Europeans. 1938 1938 1935 1934 1933 1929 1929 1933 1937 1939 1941 1941 Anne Frank and her family fled from Germany to Amsterdam in 1934. They fled because Hitler became chancellor of Germany and it was no longer safe for them to live their anymore being Jews. Although the Franks considered Germany their home they has to go away in order to be safe, even though the Netherlands would not be safe for long either. 1938 On November 9, 1938 violence against Jews broke out. The actions were by German's and their anger towards Jews after a Jewish teen had killed a German Officer. This horrible event where many Jewish synagogues, homes, and businesses were burned became known as the, "Night of the Broken Glass". People called it this because of the broken pieces of glass windows that covered the streets. 1939 On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Before invading Poland the German's had one concern, the Soviet Union to resolve this they made a pact with them known as the Nazi-Soviet pact and after that their was no stopping Hitler from invading Poland. The invasion of Poland was the first military engagement of WWII. After the invasion of Poland, Britian declared war on Germany and then everyone knew that WWII had really began. Sources
