Truss Bridge
Truss:
-type of bridge
-load-bearing superstructure
-composed of a truss,
a structure of connected elements forming triangular units.
-one of the oldest types of large bridges in the United States
Purpose
To enable bridges to be built over places that have unstable ground.
Materials used:
-Popsicle sticks
-Wood glue
Bridge Specifications given:
-3-5 inches - width
-1-2 feet - length
-2 ½ in – height clearance
-1.5 pounds(max) – weight of bridge
Significance
-Railroads still commonly used truss bridges for trains to pass over
-Trains would not have been popular without them
-Can be almost any size
-Longer the bridge, the more support necessary
-First truss bridges were built around the 1820s
