The Storming of the Bastille * July 14th 1789
* 3:30-7:30pm
* The invasion lasted the whole afternoon * Citizens weren't happy about high taxes
* They were looking for people guilty of treason
* People were starving
* Wanted gun powder * The crowd came together outside the Bastille on the morning of July 14th 1789
* Around 1:30pm the crowd rushed into the building of the Bastille
* The fighting became more violent as the day went on
* The crowd wanted the prison to surrender and the removal of guns
* The chains on the drawbridge were cut, then gunshots began at this time
* They never did figure out which side shot first * People who lived in and around Paris
* The word spread that they needed more people to storm with them and the word got around quickly
* People were eager to rebel because the king was not popular * Occurred in Paris, France * The Bastille was a fortress-prison in Paris, France
* Built in 1370-1383 by Charles V
* Demolished in 1789 * Only 7 prisoners in the jail
* The prison was weakly guarded; only 30 guards
* Marquis de Launay was running the Bastille; killed after the invasion
* Around 600 people in the invasion * The mob managed to get 32,000 rifles
* The guards had 600 musketoons and 12 rampart muskets
* There was a slight halt from the crowd when they saw the guard's weapons
* Benard de Luanay was the governor of the Bastille
* He refused to surrender
