Activity: Who is Addicted?
Two people have been using morphine.
Chris has been taking between 50 milligrams (mg) and 500 mg each day for a year.
Pat has been taking 100 mg each day for six months. Only one of these individuals is addicted to morphine.

Who do you think is addicted to morphine? Explain your answer.

Pat's Story
Pat has been living on the streets for a year after losing her job. When the savings ran out, Pat could no longer afford the rent for an apartment and couldn’t afford to keep a car. She quickly became depressed. When another homeless person offered some morphine, Pat thought the drug might help make the problems of life go away. For the past six months, Pat and friends have been shooting up with
morphine once each day
Chris's Story
Twelve months ago, Chris was in an accident and received third-degree burns over 30 percent of his body. While in the hospital undergoing treatment, the pain was very intense. The doctors prescribed morphine that Chris could self-administer to control the pain. After all, morphine is one of the most effective pain-relief medicines available. At first, 50 mg of morphine each day would ease the pain. Later, however, Chris needed as much as 500 mg a day to ease the pain. Chris may need a dose of morphine 12 times each day.

If you are arrested at the age of 13 and become sober at 18, you are emotionally 13 years old.

Long Term Effects of Alcohol
Drinking alcohol can lower estrogen levels in adolescent girls.
Drinking alcohol can lower luteinizing hormone and testosterone levels in adolescent boys.
In both sexes, acute intoxication reduces levels of growth hormones
Increased alcohol consumption is associated with lowered bone mineral density in adolescent males but not females
A history of alcohol abuse or dependence in adolescents was associated with reduced hippocampal volumes
Long Term Effects of Marijuana/THC
Interrupts nerve impulse in the cerebellum which affects muscle movement and coordination
Marijuana decreases neuron activity in the hippocampus which affects memory
Interferes with receiving sensory messages

Statistics tell us that, whether it is long
or short term use, abusers can exhibit many of these deficits
Drug use before 18 is the best predictor of later drug abuse
Alter's Perception
Perceptive abilities are not fully matured in teens
Teens use the Amygdala to process emotions versus an adult who uses their frontal lobes
Implications
Teens develop an inability to determine their feelings and motives of other people
Misunderstandings of failures in school, work, and relationships
Retreating further into drugs
If your identity is drugs
then what?
• Betrayal and loss of trust.
o You have the doors locked.
• Abuse, threats and violence
o There are holes in the wall.
• Sibling anger and resentment
o Better off now with them gone.
• Isolated, disgraced and humiliated
o You are on your own with it.
