It was founded by the Secretary General of the United Nations in 1997
aim of the establishment:

Improve the cooperation between the organisations that play a role in development

right now there are 32 organisations in it
e.g.
UNESCO (Education, Science and Culture)
UNAIDS (Programme on AIDS)

George Harrison and Ravi Shankar teamed up to raise money for UNICEF.
Concert for Bangladesh
They raised 1.5 million dollars.
