Internet There is SO much information out there It is very common to use the first resources found. and it's very important to critically evaluate every resource! However, take the extra time to ensure that the sources are good ones, no matter what the information is for. Academic Purposes or Personal Use (like your essay assignment) (looking up medical info) HOW DO YOU KNOW A SITE IS A RELIABLE SOURCE C R urrency The CRAAP Test Applying this test will help you make an objective decision about the sources. A A P uthority ccuracy urpose elevance When was the information published or posted?
Has the information been revised or updated?
Is the information current or out-of-date for your topic?
Are the links functional? www.newyorktimes.com This criteria is especially important for news and health information. the timeliness of the information the importance of the information for your needs Does the information relate to your topic or answer your question?
Who is the intended audience?
Is the information at an appropriate educational level for your need?
Would you be comfortable using this source for a research paper? Who is the author/publisher/source/sponsor?
Are the author’s credentials or organizational affiliations given?
What are the author’s qualifications to write on the topic?
Is there contact information such as publisher or email address?
Does the URL reveal anything about the author or source? (Internet) examples: .com .edu .gov .net .org www.harvard.edu Examine their claims carefully ... can they back up what they say? Where does the information come from?
Is the information supported by evidence?
Has the information been reviewed?
Can you verify the information in another source or
from personal knowledge?
Does the language or tone seem biased and free of emotion?
Are there spelling, grammar, or other typographical errors? PURPOSE: the reason the
information exists What is the purpose of the information? To inform? teach? sell? entertain? or persuade?
Does the author make his/her intentions or purpose clear?
Is the information fact? opinion? propaganda?
Does the point of view appear objective and impartial?
Are there political, ideological, cultural, religious, institutional, or personal biases? example! http://www.cacp.org/ Look for their reason for creating the web site ... what to they want to get out of it? http://www.flickr.com/photos/56547231@N00/957538946/ Some criteria may be more or less important depending on your need.

Example: CURRENCY isn’t as relevant on a source devoted to literary criticism as it is on a site dealing with medical procedures. PURPOSE: Sometimes the info on a web site could be considered biased because of the organization' beliefs. However, if the organization provides reference and it supports your thesis - explain why you're using it! Search Wisely! If you have any questions, please ask.
