Transcript of Solar Energy

Solar Energy Solar Energy is the Sun's rays that reach Earth Where does Solar Energy come from? Photovalaic Devices or solar cells change sunlight directly into electricity. Individual PV cells are grouped panels & arrays of panels. These panels can be used in a wide range of small applications to large. How does Solar Energy work? Concentrating Solar Power Plants generate electricity by using the heat from soler thermal collectors to heat a fluid which produces steam that is used to power the generator. Advantages & Disadvantages of Solar Energy... Advantages: Solar Energy users have the option to sell the energy they don't use back to the electric company. Solar Energy is non-polluting. There are no moving parts that could break down or impair the process of harnessing the energy. Solar Energy requires no supervision & little mainenance. After purchasing the equipment, it runs at low cost. It has a running life of about 20-30 years. Disadvantages: The amount of sunlight that arrives at the Earth's surface is not constant. It depends on location, time of day, time of year, and weather conditions. Because the Sun doesn't deliver that much energy to any one place, at any one time, a large surface area is required to use the energy at a useful rate. India is becoming one of the world's main producers of PV modules, with plans to power 100, 000 villages and install solar-powered telephones in its 500,000 villages. In the 1830's, British astronomer, John Herscel, famously used a solar thermal collector box to cook food during an expedition to Africa. Has Solar Energy been used successfully in the past? Solar Power can cut energy bills by more than 50% each year in a home where a solar model replaces the electric water heater. Solar Energy can usually cost anywhere between 20 to 100 thousand dollars, depending on the extravegancy of the equpiment.
