"Genetic Modification is a special set of technologies that alter the genetic makeup of organisms such as animals, plants, or bacteria." These foods are made so that they last longer, naturally resist insects or for desired nutrients. Lets say a farmer wants his tomatoes to resist the insects that feast on them: Genetically Modified Foods Should they be served in a school cafeteria? Is GM food safe? The industry will always tell you, "There's no proof that these foods harmful to us. After all, we've been eating them for several years now." Well, there is no proof that anybody has gotten ill from GM food because these industries don't let us know that their food is genetically modified foods. There's also the argument that if these foods are toxic to an insect, it must be toxic to us as well. Dr. Bruce Ames at the University of California has been studying GM foods for the past two decades and has found there is many toxic substances in the foods but they are found in a very small amount, so they can't be harmful to us. What are GM foods? 1st step Finished 2nd step Last step Start A biotechnology company will take an insect resistant gene and cut out a portion of that gene. Insert the gene into a vector and then copy the vector in bacteria. Coat tungsten or gold particles with DNA vectors. Insert the DNA vector covered tungsten into a bullet. Insert DNA vector bullets into a gene gun. Shoot the vectors into a plant cells, then place the GM plant cells in a container so they can grow. " In 2006, 252 million acres of GM crops were planted in 22 countries by 10.3 million farmers. Most of these crops were herbicide- and insect-resistant soybeans, corn, cotton, canola, and alfalfa. Make more plants with no seeds, cutting back greatly on cost.
GM foods can be manipulated to contain vitamins, minerals, and proteins that they normally wouldn't have.
GM crops can carry medicines and vaccines to parts of the world where it is too expensive to have medicines. Cons of GM Foods May contain some unknown diseases.
Insects may become resistant to the natural pesticides in plants.
Weeds may cross breed with GM plants and become herbicide-resistant which will spawn into a generation of "superweeds."
Can create allergen that will make humans sick. I believe that GM foods should be served in school cafeteria. 60% of the food we eat today is genetically modified. Genetically modified foods have helped third-world countries all over the world, by giving them medicines and nutrients that they can't afford. Companies and the FDA keep telling us there is no proof that these foods are harmful. Of course, there will always be the argument that if these foods aren't labeled, than how will we know that these foods are harming us. All I have to say about that is, that is a totally different topic on its own. Should these foods be labeled? Should GM foods be served in a school cafeteria? When Joseph Hotchkiss was asked of these food should be labeled, his response was: "If you're going to label anything in a food, you have to be able to enforce the truthfulness of that labeling. If you're going to say "GMO free," for example, you have to first define what that means, and develop a system for enforcing it. If I use soybean oil from a genetically modified soybean, and I cook battered fish in it and then I freeze those fish, does that fish contain a genetically modified organism or food, or doesn't it? It's not clear. Someplace, you're going to have to draw the line...''
Jeremy Rifkin was also asked this question and said: "We label everything in the U.S. You can look on a label on processed food and you can see the whole history of that food. Why would we make an exception when it came to GMO ingredients?"
I agree with Jeremy. I think if we let the public know what nutrients and calories and the whole entire history of the food they're about to eat, we should let them that they're food was genetically modified. Yes, they should.
