Patterns of Physical
Development By; Nicole Lawrence Near and Fear Simple and Complex Head to Foot This continues after birth and can be seen in the increasing control that babies gain over their body.
Head control is first to develop.
the raise of their head to see an object Control of muscles then moves down
the body to the arms and hands.
Control of the baby's legs and feet occurs
more slowly.
Age one the baby develops enough skills
needed to walk. Development starts close to the trunk of the body and moves outward. First baby's simply wave their arms
when they see an object the want. Later they develop more precise hand and finger control and can reach out and grasp for an object with their fingers. Pattern of simple to complex, babies first develop their large muscle groups- such as those in the legs, neck, arms, and torso. As they strengthen and gain control over these muscles, they learn to do increasingly complex tasks. These tasks begin with controlling the head, rolling, reaching, crawling and continue through to walking More complex movements that require small muscle development come later.
Coloring for example: requires good control of the fingers to grasp, hold, and direct a crayon. Growth
refers to changes in size, such as weight and length
refers to increases and changes in Physical, Emotional, Social, or Intellectual skills.

Infants physical development follows three basic patterns:
Head to Foot
Near to Far
Simple to Complex Growth and development This pattern of development begins long before
Starting during the prenatal stage,
when a baby's head takes the lead in
