Tin Tin has been known to humans since ancient times and has been in uses for over 5,500 years.Therefore, it is impossible to find data detailing its discovery. An alloy of tin, bronze, made by mixing tin and copper, was probably in use earlier than tin in its pure form. Because bronze was more durable than copper it was very useful among people during the Bronze Age (4000 to 3000 B.C.) Used to make tools, eating utensils, and weapons; it significantly improved the quality of life during this era.
History Most items presumably made from tin, such as tinfoil, tin toys, and tin cans, are currently made with just tin-plated steel or aluminum. Today, both tin and its alloys are in wide use. For example, tin is used in the Pilkington process (the most common process) of making glass. Molten glass is poured onto a layer of molten tin. When the liquids cool, they form solid glass. One alloy of tin is solder, a mix of tin and lead, which is used to join two metals together. Another alloy of tin and niobium is used to create superconductive wire. Tin salts are sprayed on glass to make electrically conductive coatings used to make frost-free windshields and stannous fluoride, a compound of tin is used in certain types of toothpaste.

Two Intriguing Facts About Tin:
1. Tin's Latin name,"Stannum", gave it the chemical symbol Sn.

2. Tin has a highly crystalline structure, so whenever a bar of tin is bent the crystals break and a tin "cry" is heard.
