Photojournalism is an arm of journalism that uses images to tell stories and report events. It is different from other forms of photography such as commercial, Architecture and industrial photography.

This could be seen in its adherence to certain journalism norms like News, Timeliness Objectivity, fairness and accurate representation of the events

Photojournalism is a branch of journalism characterized by the use of images to tell a story. A picture tells a thousand words What is Photojournalism Why is photojournalism important? A photo-editor To Conclude: The advent of photographs mechanically printed into newspapers opened up market for press photography. Pictures were mostly taken for their action and content rather than any aesthetic consideration. Today, they are used in the newspapers for different reasons.

Photographs in Journalism inform, educate and enlighten readers about current issues and also reflect on the past as well. Photographs in Newspaper enhance the credibility of the stories. As they depict 'reality', they also furnish evidence to show the authenticity of a news story or give proof of an event that occurred.

Its aesthetic values enable a photograph to serve as a tool to attract reader’s attention and break the monotony of news content. Thus, photographs enhance and beautify the pages of a newspaper.

A photograph in Newspaper speaks more than a thousand words. No formal education is required to understand a picture. Photographs are therefore able to break through literacy barrier to effectively communicate a message. It is a universal language. This lack of a visual culture at the newspaper may be attributed to the lack of photographic mentor in the newsroom.

A photo-editor has a number of different roles within the news room Grocott's recognises the importance of photographs but fails to 'invest' in them properly. Even mediocre photographs attract an audience and a good news picture even on an inside page may attract 80% of the paper's readership (Evans 1978: 4)

What comes first is satisfying the public's appetite for news- for the sensation of being there and for an image that the mind can hold.

Photographs satisfy the one need we seem to have between midway between emotion and intellect: and ache for visual confirmation

The capacity of the single image to lodge itself permanently in memory. As a medium that furnish readers with News, information in the Newspaper is expressed through linguistic, typographic and graphic forms which are defined by the media organisation’s house style. This in its totality affects the way news is gathered and reported in the newspaper including the use of photography. Andrew Burton freelance photojournalist and multimedia producer based in New York. His work has been published in and distributed through The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, TIME, Newsweek, Getty Images, the Associated Press, Reuters, Bloomberg News, USA Today, CNN, MSNBC, Dateline, The Today Show and The Oregonian, amongst others. He has a degree in journalism with a focus in photography from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. "I would say photojournalism is the cross breed between two-dimensional, visual art and journalistic ethic.

At photojournalism’s worst, photographs can re-enforce stereotypes and strip people of their dignity (and when photojournalists are at their worst, they can be self-absorbed, vulture-like, inhumane people).

But when photojournalism is working at it’s best, it sheds light on important issues, acts as a visual-historic record, holds peoples/societies/governments accountable, demands answers, empowers people and speaks truth to the darkness. When photojournalists are acting at their best, they aim for this and recognize it is their job to strive for these things.

The role of photography
at Grocotts Mail The photographs at Grocotts Mail in the words of Harold Guess are a 'Major Problem'

While Editor Steven land does take some photographs however his background is in radio and print which means he doesn't come from a visual background.

The role of the news photograph at Grocott's from my brief experience seen to be something which adds to the story. The news photo is seen as the driving force of the story generally. At the newspaper that photographs are valued but are not invested in. I mean this in a sense that if substandard photographs are taken they will still be used. Even on the front page. However when there are good photographs they are most of the time used well. My notion of the role of photography of Grocott's is that it was meant to be illustrative of the story and therefore doesn't hold as much importance as the story.

Photographs are often of the ‘Grip and Grin’ variety – seen on the applause pages.

Thus there isn't a great visual culture established at the newspaper. Grocott's Misses Out The relationship between the photojournalism department and Grocott's Male has never really taken off. According to previous managing Editor Louise Vale and Harold Guess calling previous partnership endeavors a "disaster."

Although photojourn students are not a part of the newsroom anymore they are still expected to take news photographs on a weekly basis as well as supply a PAW (pic of the week) which are made available to Grocott's Mail yet these are seldom used.

All third year and fourth year students are required to produce photo-essays yet these are rarely seen.

Because there is no pics editor or photo-mentor the newspaper lacks visual dimension. Grocott's Mail Strengths and Improving Grocott's has the platform to make use of good visual imagery. Photographs should be seen as their own entity. They should be seen as stand alones.
Grocott’s Mail has wealth of resources available to them not only in terms of the journ school but also in terms of its own staff. photographs are given importance but not ‘invested’ in.
As an experiential learning newspaper Grocotts encourages and asks writers to take photos and use them. It should also have designated photographers Opening the channels of communication and a more streamlined approach between the photojourn department and Grocott’s Mail is one option. But More so improvement can start in the newsroom –

Both students working for Grocott’s and Grocott’s staff have excellent grasps on narratives and what makes a good visual story all that lacks is technical skill. This can be accomplished with workshops and pushing writers to photograph whilst also collaborating with the photojourn department in a feasible way that advantages both the department and the newspaper. Additionally the photojournalism department produces some interesting and topical stories. These are obviously done in the capacity of students however they can and should be used by Grocott's. So much of the work photojournalism students do ends up sitting on their hard drives There needs to be a way to place that in Grocotts mail. “Perhaps, I would like to see more co-operation with the photo-journ dept. The paper is an ideal platform to publish their photo essays and news and feature photography,” Jonathon Ancer . Grocott's Mail has the platform and tools and resources to make better use of photography A more streamlined relationship with the photojourn school should be encouraged. Publishing PAWS and photo - essays could become a feature adding a strong visual element to the newspaper. Technical workshops and critiques could be had with writers and Grocott's staff could be held to improve photographs in the newsroom "If your pictures aren’t good enough, you aren’t close enough."
