The Importance Of The Canadian Flag
“Canada getting its own flag was important because it showed Canada was independent as a country and affected Canada by showing it’s separation from Britain.”
My Thesis
What I'm Going to Prove

Until 1965, Canada did not have its own national flag. Canada used to use the Red Ensign. It was unofficial but was still hung over Parliament buildings.
Gaining Independence
As Canada was gaining Independence the government realized how their attachment to Britain was affecting them.

Canada was being dragged into any decisions the British were making.
The Red Ensign
Around the 1760s the British Union Flag was used as Canada's unofficial flag.

Then the Red Ensign, which also showed Canada's coat of arms of its provinces. The shield was updated as new provinces were created.
Flags that were Used
“Canada getting its own flag was important because it showed Canada was independent as a country and affected Canada by showing it’s separation from Britain.”

It didn't cause Canada's independence, but was a major part in making it's independence official.
The Flag should represent all of Canada
Many French Canadians and a lot of other Canadians didn't like the British involvement.

After WW1 Prime Minister Mackenzie King (and the rest of Canada) wanted Canada to be separated from the British foreign Policy.
A New Flag
In 1925 research was started to find a design for the new flag, but wasn't continued.

Then, in 1946 a parliament committee asked for designs and got over 2,600 but there was never a vote to agree on one.
