You won't remember everything, so take notes
You don't need to write everything the teacher says or has on the board
You need to review your notes or they become worthless
Summarize and Synthesize notes: "If I had to explain this to someone, how would I do it?"

Teachers will tell you that the laziest boy in the class is the one who works the hardest in the end. They mean this:

Your teacher gives you this topic. What are the steps you would take to begin this research paper? Be specific. At least 10 steps.
Choose an American historical figure who lived between 1900-2000 and explain his/her influence on the world. Craft a thesis and write a 4-6 page essay that establishes an argument for why this figure is worthy of being called a "contributor to American society." Provide specific examples from this person's life. Use a combination of book and electronic resources.
