Transcript of Koala

Northern Koalas have grayish whitish fur and the Southern Koalas have brownish and longer fur then the northern koala
Koalas are mammals.
They can weigh up to 20 pounds and 30 pounds.
Its length can be 3ft long
Special paws to grip the tree
The average of a females life span is about 12 years.
They smell like cough drops from the eucalyptus leaves.
Koalas only eat one kind of plant it is called Eucalyptus leaves.
Koalas have special teeth to break down the poison in the plant.
The koala is a very picky eater.
It is a herbivore
Food Chain
One behavior of a koala is that they rarely drink water because they get all the water they need from the eucalyptus leaves
They also have some very unique behaviors too like how they have no nerves in their lower body and that they have night vision to see at night.
They are nocturnal animals which means they are asleep all day and active during the night.

Koalas sleep up to 18 hours a day and they only get up to eat.
Interesting facts
They are born with a sense of incredible awesome smell and they never loose it. Adults can figure out how many koalas are in the area just by their smell.
The front and back claws on a koala are different.
Koalas are the only other animal, like humans, that have individual fingerprints
Koala bears aren't actully bears. They are marsupials which mean female marsupials have a permanent pouch in which to raise their young.

Koalas eat up to 2 pounds of eucalytus leaves each day.
Where Koalas live
They are found in the Western parts of Australia.
That part of Australia has eucalypt forests and coastal islands.
Why are the koala population decreasing?
Sexually transmitted disease
Blindness and infertility in koalas and can cause death
In some parts of Australia, koala infection rates are as high as 90%.
Treatable with antibiotics but takes months
Approximately 80% of the koala habitat has been decreased.
They have been turning the eucalyptus forests into cities because more people are coming,
