Existentialist
or
Determinist?
Philosophy in this Scene
Existentialism/determinism:
Fate:
Philosophy in this Scene:
Neo vs. Cypher
American–Australian science fiction action film
Written and directed by The Wachowski Brothers
Starring Keanu Reeves as Neo, and Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus
Dystopian future
Reality that is perceived by most humans is actually a simulated reality called "the Matrix"
Is created by sentient machines to subdue the human population
Computer programmer "Neo" learns this truth and is drawn into a rebellion against the machines, which involves other people who have been freed from the "dream world".
Blue pill = a deterministic life style
Designed or pre-determined for you by an outside force
Of the Matrix, you are giving up your free will and choice, and given an illusion of choice
Red pill = an existentialist life.
Truly in control of what happens
In charge of their own life, with no ultimate controlled design
Reality is Only A Reflection
The Matrix: Real Or Fake?
Philosophy in this Scene:
Philosophy in this Scene:
What is reality?
Reality:
Simulated Reality
Cypher
Human mind confuses images with reality
we think images ARE reality at times
"It is impossible to bend it, but you should instead only realize the truth, that there is no spoon."
Old Buddhist story of three monks

Authenticity:
Honesty or Ignorance?
Authenticity = a state in which the individual is aware of the true nature of the human condition
Neo Vs. Cypher
Inauthenticity = a state in which the individual is either ignorant of the true nature of reality or in denial with respect to it
Neo:
Example of an authentic lifestyle
Decided to take the red pill, allowed both him and his mind to be open to true reality
No longer allowed to live life behind a wall of illusions
Make his own choices according to what he truly wants to do.
Cypher:
Ignorance is truly bliss.
Once shown the true reality outside of the Matrix
No longer wanted to live that lifestyle
It was not as harsh as the true reality was
Description of the average human being
All find some comfort in the familiar
Believe that our surroundings are perfect and happy even when they are not.
Conclusion
Karl Marx - "Matter is the objective reality given to us in sensation"
Matter = Reality, Mind = Matter, therefore Mind = Reality
Morpheus asks what is real, and then proceeds to describe it as what we can taste, smell, feel, and see
- Those senses are only "electrical signals interpreted by your brain" therefore the Matrix is just as real as 'reality'.
