Victor Hugo was a French novelists, critic, historian, playwright, poet, statesman, human rights activists, artists and journalist.
He is known as one of the greatest French Romantic writers.
Hugo’s views changed as time went by. He became a big supporter of republicanism.
Hugo’s work mostly revolves around issues present in his life.
As a child he witnessed many political changes in France. The rise of the First French Empire and Napoleon Bonaparte’s dictatorship were the most significant. France at that time was not stable.
Hugo was brought up by his mother who was a Catholic Royalist, but later rebelled against the Catholic Royalist to become a Republican.
1815 to 1818 Hugo studied law at Lycée Louis-le-Grand but it became useless to him.
1822- he married Adèle Foucher and had five children with her.
Hugo’s father was a soldier who later became a general in Napoléon Bonaparte’s army. His failure in Spain excluded him from having his name engraved on L'Arc de Triomphe. His mother was a royalist with very different views. She was linked to a general who was executed for plotting against Napoléon.
Hugo was very influential during his time, shaping democracy in France and creating the Third Republic. He was an important political leader as well.
When he died close to one million people attended his burial in the Pantheon in Paris.
