Make sure that your home has been built to cyclone standards by checking with your local council or building control authority.
Check the condition of your roof and repair any loose tiles or roof screws.
Tape up windows with masking tape in preparation for the cyclone.
Prepare a list of emergency phone numbers in case of a complication.
Clear gutters of leaves and debris.
Trim the treetops and branches of any overhanging your house but remember to get council permission first.
For all glass areas, make sure you get fit shutters or at least metal screens.
Eliminate any lose material around your property that can damage or cause injury throughout extreme winds.
Find out where your nearest safe high ground and the safest way to it in case of a flood.
Get ready an emergency kit containing a portable battery radio, torch and spare batteries; water containers, dried or canned food and a can opener; matches, fuel lamp, portable stove, cooking gear, eating utensils; and a first aid kit and manual.
Make sure your neighbours are informed about everything and are prepared for it.

Ocean waves will ascend in size as cyclone approaches; however the period between waves will descend. Wind waves, also known as chop and small waves breaking offshore as a result of the action of strong winds, also know as whitecaps will eventually begin to overtake the surface of the water.
On a barometer, you should notice that as a cyclone gets nearer, the air pressure it measures starts to fall.
When you finally realise a big increase in winds, the approaching storm may be less than 24 hours from landfall.
Several hours before the full force of a cyclone hits land, the outer rainbands of a cyclone can arrive.
