Transcript of american colonies

Jamestown Jamestown was established in1607 when The London Company sent over 144 men. It took them four months to make it to Jamestown and only 105 men lasted the trip Jamestown was the first permanent North American colony. Roanoke was the first but it disappeared. The only problem with Jamestown was they only sent over men. Jamestown was located in the Chesapeake region. The land was unhealthy, they had unclean water, which caused malaria,it was hot and humid. Because of the unhealthy conditions 2/3 of the men died in the first year. The reason they came to Jamestown was the three G's, Gold, God, and Glory. The english were hurting from the cost of the wars, so they needed money. The wealthy younger sons came because the oldest of the sons got all the inheritance. Between 1607-1608 most of the men had died. In 1608 John Smith arrived to organize them. In 1609 John Smith got powder burn and had to leave. After he left in the colony was a diaster. After John Smith left the colony was a disaster. Then Lord de la Warr came in. He reorganized the colony and made the Native Americans angry. Tobacco saved Jamestown. When they made tobacco it destroyed the farmland and they had to start buying slaves. John Rolfe created the first successful tobacco. In 1619 the House of Burgess was established. This was one of the first forms of representative government in North America. Also in 1619, the first slaves arrived to North America on Dutch ships. They had 20 slaves put for sale. http://www.google.com/imgres?q=the+london+company&hl=en&safe=strict&biw=1366&bih=673&tbm=isch&tbnid=x9br2mNfBiBIcM:&imgrefurl=http://www.tlcadvisory.com/&imgurl=http://www.tlcadvisory.com/images/ship.gif&w=260&h=175&ei=zAFBUKWgOeKW2QXguYDYDA&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=295&vpy=180&dur=4073&hovh=140&hovw=208&tx=103&ty=58&sig=113894062567551363249&page=1&tbnh=140&tbnw=148&start=0&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0,i:75 http://www.google.com/imgres?q=jamestown&hl=en&safe=strict&biw=1366&bih=673&tbm=isch&tbnid=2S4oxC7-U3-NaM:&imgrefurl=http://www.xtimeline.com/evt/view.aspx%3Fid%3D47065&imgurl=http://www.xtimeline.com/__UserPic_Large/1676/ELT200712071148405218894.GIF&w=740&h=513&ei=hwJBULXVIIjc2gWjmoDQDA&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=623&vpy=320&dur=2794&hovh=187&hovw=270&tx=125&ty=83&sig=113894062567551363249&page=1&tbnh=146&tbnw=225&start=0&ndsp=17&ved=1t:429,r:8,s:0,i:97 Jamestown became the first colony to survive. They wanted to be successful in their new lives. One of the good things about colonization that William Penn talked about was that the colonies had better industries than England. Another was that since they were making and selling so much tobacco, they were getting a lot of money. Also they could marry more than once, which was frowned upon by The Church of England. Lastly the new colonies had better job opportunities than England did.
There is also some bad things about colonization. One is that when they do colonize they are pushing the Indians out of their land, which will cause a rift between them and the Indians, which is never a good thing. Secondly some of the citizens might not be fit for farm life, because they are not used to it. Also some of them are coming from luxuries like butlers, maids, etc. well they do not have those there and it is going to be hard for them to adjust to it. Lastly when people colonize they usually bring over disease, which can kill the people. The citizens did not live a really long life the would make it to about 40 then die. In England they probably had longer lives than any of the colonists.
