Overall Design Tips
Use Real World Language
Make it relevant to users
Don't assume your page is clear, check with others
Use who, what, when, where, why
Brevity & Scanability
Online text should be about 1/2 as long as written text
Never sacrifice clarity for brevity
Include bullets, use easy to read text and consider color and contrast.
Use the KISS method of design.
Keep it simple!!
Navigation, terminology, tone, and style are consistent throughout the site
Consistent with industry standards.
Use Buttons that look and act like buttons; links stand out
Nothing destroys the credibility of a site more than spelling and grammatical errors, navigation errors, broken links, or outdated information.
Specific Design Issues
How long do users stay before leaving a non-loading page?
Avoid animation & sound unless needed
Use Thumbnails for images
Reading speeds on the Web are 25% slower from a computer screen than from paper. Users tend to scan rather than read
Because of downloading delays, text links are often the first thing visible and users often try text links before graphic links.
Less is more
Rainbows are great but not on your website
Limit to 1 - 2 main colors
Do not base your site on color
10% of population is color blind so no...click on blue button
Choose contrasting colors - black on white...

Don't align Center
Use same font
Avoid ALL CAPS

Do not make too busy
Image backgrounds - make sure can read text
Make sure people can get where they want to go
