Transcript of Nike Flyknit
Created in 2012, the Flyknit was designed to be tailored to runners whom are seeking a form fitting shoe with a similar feel to a sock.
Currently, Nike uses a special blend of yarns consisting of polyethylene terephthalate for the upper combined with a plastic phylon midsole for responsive cushioning. Currently, my colleagues and I believe that there are three steps we can take within the life cycle to make the Nike Flyknit Racer a greener product. Nike Flyknit Isn't being greener the same as making more "green?" Inspiring customers to purchase this new, greener, version of the Nike Flyknit Racer will be simple.
1) Use athletes such as Ashton Eaton, Usain Bolt, Michael Johnson, and many others in different countries around the world.

Alessandro Zuccarello Life Cycle of the Nike Flyknit Racer The Nike Flyknit, according to many sources, is created at a rate of about 170,000 pairs each year.
Currently, the Nike Flyknit is composed of a single yarn comprised of many different properties, but all a type of polyethylene terephthalate.
Our polymer, PET, within this product currently contains oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon atoms from crude oil.
In addition to the non-bio based monomers, the upper is made of a synthetic polyester. The Nike Flyknit has an amazing life cycle in terms of sustainability. First, the materials used in manufacturing of the product are moderately sustainable. The shoe produces less waste than the weight of a single piece of paper. Also, it is believed that Nike uses Stoll CMS 530 HP knitting machines which produce only lint waste. Also, the assembly of the shoe is virtually seamless, connecting the phylon outsole to the polyester upper using flywire technology. On the topic of product use, there is no waste or harm to the environment done from these shoes' end of life. Level Refining the Problem The original polymer that we are working with is the polyethylene terephthalate within the upper of the shoe. This specific polymer is used commonly in synthetic fibers and does not contain polyethylene or plastic.
The monomers that make up this polymer are terephthalic acid and ethyleneglycol.
According to one source, the polyethylene terephthalate in portions of the upper are stronger or weaker depending on where support is necessary.
Synthetic polyester, as used in Nike Flyknits, do not have biodegradable properties so you must use hydrolytic, thermal, and thermal oxidation for degradation. 1) Our first, and main solution, is the use of a natural polyester which contains bio based monomers which will allow the polyethlene terephthalate to be biodegradable. This would make it greener in terms of "closing the loop" as well as using more green chemistry.
2) Create a more efficient and effective way of producing these uppers. There is large demand for this product in the running community; however, it is very limited and Nike is losing money by not being able to utilize processes available in American such as 3D printing.
3) Lastly, generally speaking, there is a large need for more effective transportation of these products. Although this is an ongoing issue, it is extremely necessary to analyze what can be done. With the goal to improve the performance of this specific shoe on the chemical level, we could use copolymers, blending, and making composite materials to create a stronger bond between the polymers, making the fabric less subject to tear. Inspiring customers will come from a designed marketing campaign involving a very transparent and stimulating advertisement involving specific athletes with a passion for sustainability and running. Already through the Flyknit, Nike has been able to reduce waste and meet the needs of a new market by tailoring a sock-like fit to this running shoe. However, with the new, more innovative Flyknit racing shoe, we will be presented with many new advantages. Create and improve brand loyalty through a relentless pursuit of perfection. Also, using green chemistry will provide for an opportunity to innovate and increase the performance and durability of the Flyknit. Nike is also being introduced to an opportunity to move away from crude oil and other limited resources. Lastly, Nike will be maximizing their public relations as well as extending their patents. Nike has consistently used brand image, customer preference, and product differentiation to market their shoes. Why fix what isn't broken? As well as utilizing these athletes, we will be sure to maintain a transparent campaign which will allow us to avoid the seven sins of greenwashing. Thank you for your time.
