Self-Assessment

What made me unique?
Describe any work or volunteer experiences I have had? How did the experience impact me?
I am a weekly volunteer at Oakton library since 10th grade. I worked at a church as a summer helper. I am a volunteer in many different organizations and community activities. Also, I have been volunteering through many school events, activities, and clubs…..

The most significant volunteer experience that I have had is working at the Fairfax County Public Library. This experience has taught me what persistence is. There were many times I felt boring and I wanted to quit, but I developed some new skills after I stayed. This volunteer experience gives me a very good lesson about persistence; as time fled, my views on one thing have changed.

If I had a motto to live by,
what would it be and why?
I have many mottos that have supported and inspired me in the past. These mottos are regarding life, success, actions, and value….If I had to choose one to live by, it would be
NEVER GIVE UP
because I believe this one can apply in life frequently, regardless of whether I am a student who feels stress about school works or an adult who struggles about work and family. This motto can give me the courage to continue my life goals. As long as I never quit, everything is fine. It’s impossible to fail.
Describe an incident in which I demonstrated strong character?
The reason many students sign up for AP classes because we want to have the one point bonus. Many students focus on their grades instead of the course itself. However, I have different opinions. I strongly believe high school is an important place to develop my personality; grades should not be the only thing I should concern. I learned many useful materials in the class; this knowledge can help me in the future (The grade I got in that class is on the paper, but what I learned in that class is in my brain). From failing a test, missing a deadline and having an opposite argument with peers on an issue…I learned how to handle life’s obstacles. I have demonstrated commitment to high ideals and more advanced thinking.

Which single activity has been most important to me and why?

The most important activity to me is my participation in summer camp. I got the chance to meet new friends from everywhere, live with them and learn about each other in a few weeks. Also, this summer camp was a teenager military training summer camp, which means I had challenging tasks and I couldn’t go back to the dormitory until I completed the task. It was interesting and painful. I didn’t cry or complain about the harsh conditions like other girls. I discovered my capacity; I did a lot of things that I couldn’t imagine before. I realized how strong and independent I could be. This experience also gave me courage when I was afraid to try something challenging because I never knew what I was capable of unless I attempted it.
Zhiqing was born in China and moved to the U.S at 15 years old. Growing up, she has developed the values of integrity, logical thinking and determination to achieve her goals. She has also developed an open-mind to accept new ideas from others. She is insightful and able to analyze issues. Above all, Zhiqing is extremely hard-working. She has passion for school and other activities. She is capable to open the next chapter of her life. She is ready to take the challenge and will succeed in all she does.
If I were to write my own recommendation, what would I say in my first paragraph that would prompt my reader to read on?
I am looking forward to college because I want to learn more about what I am capable of. I am prepared and ready to begin the next chapter of my life. I am prepared and ready to better myself with the experience intellectually, physically and mentally in college and as a person. I am also ready to expand my horizons and to contribute to my community.

I came to the U.S. at 15 years old. Maybe my language foundation is not as good as others, but I have kept progressing; my grades have improved every year. I definitely am a good candidate for getting in these schools.
(In Virginia Beach)
(In New York)
What made me unique?
I was not a straight A student. I did not have a 36 on my ACT. I did not have a talent that good enough to get a reward in the international. Despite I was not perfect, but I never stop finding myself!

If I had any explanation on my academic(Grade and ACT)?
My grades have kept progressing. My GPA has increased every year. I never stop studying. I have taken summer school every year to improve myself. As a graduating senior from a top high school in the country, I am proud of my accomplishments and my academic record. I know that I will be an excellent student and high achiever at college and in all my future endeavors.
If I had any explanations on my transcript?
I do not have as many AP and Honors classes on my transcript as other American students. In my home country, China, students take a final test to be eligible for certain colleges. So, they do not choose courses based on how they would prepare them to apply to different schools, as students in America do. I started to take Honors and AP classes that I was eligible for during my sophomore year. They were challenging classes that my counselor and teachers suggested I drop because it might harm my grade, but I refused to do it. I love to study, and I love the challenge. I am proud of the excellent grade I got in those classes, but even more important than the grades is what I learned.
