TYPE OF CLIMATE
Hot summers over 100 degrees Fahrenheit

Cold winters under 40 degrees Fahrenheit

Mainly hot and humid with a mean temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit

Annual precipitation: 10-30 inches

Middle latitudes in the interiors of continents
Found in: North American prairies, Eurasian steppes (Ukraine), South African veld, & pampas of South America

Elevation: around sea level to 2850 meters above
Mainly herbivores, such as:
deer, gazelles, mice, bison, & prairie dogs
Plant eating grazers known as Ungulates
Many animals suffer from lack of shelter from predators in the grasslands

Dominated by grasses, such as:
purple needle grass, wild oats, buffalo grass, & foxtail

Flowers include:
wildflowers, indigos, blazing stars, sunflowers and clovers

Human Importance
We use grasslands to grow wheat and other grains for humans
The soil can be very fertile which is excellent for farming and grazing animals
Provide excellent hunting for bison, quail, and pheasants
Organism Adaptations
Some animals coloring blends in with plant life, to keep them protected from predators.

Some animals have broad flat top teeth and digestive systems adapted to feed on grasses
This biome is covered with grasses and contains no trees or shrubs

About 47% of temperate grasslands have been converted to agriculture for urban development
