Planning Ahead for Academic Advising

Important College information
Proposed Structure of Faculty Academic Advising

Faculty advising is best done by the willing.

Therefore a cadre of volunteer faculty advisors, each advisor cross-trained in several disciplines, is suggested.

Note 1: Faculty advising should begin with the IEP (Individual Education Plan) and continue to be available to students until they leave Palo Alto.

Note 2: Faculty advisors should be available 12 months each year and should be located centrally on campus.

a. Coverage during fall and spring semesters could be met through faculty service obligations. Suggested faculty advising site hours are WR or MT, 11:00-2:00 and 5:00-7:00, or for extended hours if sufficient numbers of faculty are available. We suggest that ideally, office hours would remain committed to students in the faculty member’s classes.

b. Summer coverage will need to be paid: salaries, stipends, or as adjunct loads. It is suggested that adjunct faculty be invited to serve as faculty advisors.
3. Conduct a College-wide Academic Advising Campaign

Implement your Advising program

Recognize Academic Advisors
2. Define what Academic Advising means at your College.
1. Evaluate your current Advising Program and determine where you want to go.

3. The Undergraduate Advising Center

4. The Center for Academic Transitions (CAT)
Suggested design of the Center includes an intake area, private areas for advising, and room for ten to fifteen computer stations. Students should be able to drop by or make appointments, peer advisors would handle student intake and guide self-service at the computer stations.
The Faculty Advising Center will be in the Student Center.
