Demons by Imagine Dragons By Michelle Wang P.2 Connotation The End Theme Consonance Rhyme Scheme Allusion Diction Denotation Summary This song is about 2 lovers, with man being reluctant. The man is saying he can't beat death and he is already able to see heaven. In the 7th stanza it talks about his feelings that are starting to make him doubtful. He tried so hard to make his bad side go away, but it hasn't so now he is giving up. He says he can't get through this without her help, but he also doesn't want her to get hurt. This Ballad has a lot of denotation. Such as in line 18 it says, "It's where my demons hide," and the literal translation to demon is a source of evil, harm, distress, or ruin. Also in line 11 the poem says, "But with the beast inside," and the meaning of beast in the dictionary is something difficult to control or deal with. There are a lot of dark words in this poem. Such as grave, demon, blood, hell, beast, and greed. All of these words contribute to the feeling in the poem. Their denotation have to do with dark things in life. These words make the ballad's feeling dark, scary, and dangerous The rhyme scheme to this poem is

AABA CCDC EFGG HHI JKGLGG DDMD NNMN OOFE HHI JKGLGG PPQQ RRSS JKGLGG Consonance is used in this poem in lines 5, and 6. Also in lines 1, 2, and 4. The last words on each of those lines are fail, hail and cold, fold, and gold. The first set as "ail" at the end both words. The second has "old" at the end of those three words. The ballad says, "cards all fold," on line 2 which actually has to do with poker. If the cards all fold in poker you can't win, so I think he saying he can't beat death. On line 8 it says, "blood's run stale," which means all hope is lost. When the curtain’s call
Is the last of all
When the lights fade out
All the sinners crawl

So they dug your grave
And the masquerade
Will come calling out
At the mess you made

Don’t want to let you down
But I am hell bound
Though this is all for you
Don’t want to hide the truth

No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide "When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold

When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood’s run stale

I want to hide the truth
I want to shelter you
But with the beast inside
There’s nowhere we can hide

No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide" Demons by Imagine Dragons They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I want to save their light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how Demons by Imagine Dragons THEME The theme is giving up, which is what the man in the song is doing. Like in lines 31 and 32 it talks about letting the woman down and being bound to death. But the right thing to do is to fight for something you love, no matter what. Rhyme Scheme A

Saints meaning a person acknowledged as holy and kingdom as a place ruled by God. "When you feel my heat" from line 16 is an example of imagery. To let the reader feel what the narrator feels. Also on line 29 it says, "Will come calling out," so you can hear what he hears. On stanza 11 each line has recurring pattern of syllables, 6 syllables. On line 28 in this ballad it says, "and the masquerade," it doesn't mean an actual masquerade it really means cover up, or a hiding place. "They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go" The words grave and masquerade rhyme, which are found on lines 27 and 28. Also the words breed and greed rhyme too (found on lines 35 and 36)
