The unwritten rules of business etiquette help to make social interactions run more smoothly which enables employees to become successful and productive. Good etiquette reveals the culture of the organization you are working for and allows you to represent them in the best manner possible. Good Etiquette Etiquette is a code of social behavior that involves meeting expectations or social norms within a class, society, or group. Business etiquette is the generally accepted behavior or set of social guidelines and manners to be followed in business situations.
These vary from country to country. Etiquette is about being comfortable around people and also helps you in making others feel comfortable as well. What Is Etiquette Business Etiquette First Impressions First impressions are critical. Maintain eye contact while extending a confident handshake. You will be evaluated on your demeanor, mannerisms, body language, and cleanliness. Professional Image Appearance is a very important part of your professional image. The impressions you make on others, attitude towards work and co-workers, your work ethic, professional dress, and understanding of business etiquette all working in sync make up your professional image. Others will emulate good behavior and etiquette. Meetings A great opportunity to shine in front of clients, co-workers, and superiors. Every meeting should have a purpose and agenda. Discuss ideas. A participant must set in motion changes to be made. The group should provide input and a vote. Business Meals Let guests have the best seats. If you are the host, suggest food at the restaurant you are eating. Always order the same number of courses as your guest(s). If your client or company is paying, order a mid-priced item. Turn off your cell phone. International Business The business environment has become increasingly globalized and people of various races, ethnicities, and genders work together. When doing business abroad, research their culture before going. Do not rely solely on your company’s travel agent. Pack only what you need. Keep an open mind. International Etiquette Consider language, time zones, working schedules, holidays, and food customs. Practicing the customs of a foreign country may be helpful.
Shows interest and helps to make both individuals feel comfortable.
