The French hockey team defeated defending world champion Russia, 2-1 in Helsinki, Finland, on May 9, 2013. Russia was on a 13 game winning streak until the French unexpectedly beat them. It wasn't until 1992, that France was even good enough to play against Russia or the Soviet Union. "It's so big for French hockey it's hard to describe," France coach Dave Henderson said.
On May 11, 2013 France's President, François Hollande,
attended a ceremony at the Luxembourge to pay his respects and remember the day that slavery was abolished in Fracne. A Black group there demanded the government to pay reparations for about 200 years of slavery, a time when French traders deported 2 million Africans. President François Hollande rejected the demand and said, " What happened, happened. History does not erase itself. You cannot rub it out. It cannot be the object of transactions deriving form accounting that would in any case be impossible to establish."

In Europe, many of the countries share the same currency, called the Euro. If one of the countries is having economic problems, it effects all the other countries that share the currency. France is having economic problems and having more debt. Germany, one of the strongest economies, is saying that the French government is not putting in enough efforts to try and get its economy back on track. When Greece was going through this, Germany forced Greece into taking steps and making decisions to get back on track. Now Germany wants to do the same thing with France. Though, the French government is resisting the recommendations Germany is requesting.
