"Think of a sitcom, like Seinfeld, Friends, etc. Now animate it and remove the majority of sexual/crude humor. Then replace the main characters with new characters who happen to be ponies, and the setting with a mythological realm reminiscent of an Elder Scrolls game. Hopefully that clears up any questions as to why the show is so popular." - SirVladimir, FunnyJunk
"We live in a boring world filled with repetetive days that blend in and makes everything more dull. I suppose some people would enjoy seeing colorful stuff like this. I'd also guess that at least some bronies might've had a rough childhood, where as they couldn't enjoy stuff like cartoons or other activities that kids should do when they are small. This might be a reason as to why there are so many of this generation that watch it. " - Zaky, a funnyjunk user
"We could all use a laugh. Our world is pretty bleak at times. Stress of doing well, the stress of the economy, stress of the opinions of your parents/friends, etc... Our generation is expected to succeed in an economy that limits the amount of successful individuals to a very small amount... so we're pressured to rise above others. Aside from those, there are people who like to remiss their childhoods via cartoons and MLP is a very well made one with voice actors we know from childhood. Then there are others who are lonely, those of us who could use a friend and the kind and supportive community of Bronies gives us the means and courage to do so." -Male, 19
"I think there are so many because they feel accepted by one another. I talked with a fellow brony like we were the best of friends even though we NEVER talked to each other previously. The community is warm and loving and nice."-Male, 18
"I absolutely adored the feeling it gave off."- Male, 16
"i enjoy the fact that a show can be simple and well watched without having to incorporate sluts, fights, drugs etc etc etc. i find it refreshing" -Male, 17
"Because we have been freed, as a group, from the social stigma that men cannot like anything feminine. Its enlightening, its freeing, and honestly, the show is just good” - funnyjunk user dizzleforizzle
" the community is pretty non judgemental, and they come from all walks of life, and have many different intersts, making for a varied, fun community"- Male, 17
What does being a brony involve?
"It can be from as simple as watching the show every once in a while to watching it daily, buying the toys, ect. There's no age specifications." -Female, 17
All bronies watch the show, and many participate in online communities
create fan art
includes drawings, pictures, videos,etc.
write fanfiction
participate in discussions
create discussions
"rule 34 of the internet" (if it exists, there is porn of it) holds true for MLP:FIM as well, although there is somewhat of a divide between regular bronies and what are referred to as "cloppers" (bronies who participate in the rule 34 side of MLP:FIM)
fan art examples
internet community "reaction pics"
Conclusions:
it may seem strange, but these teenage/adolescent men really like My Little Pony.
Most common reasons I've seen:
message behind it
animation
fan art
music
community
my experience talking with them was fantastic.

"Deep down everyone just wants to be accepted for who they are and accepting others is part of that." -Male, 18
