Organization of Life
A look at Structure and Function!
Biosphere
So far we have discussed the organization of eco
systems
.
Let's review...
Ecosystem
Community
Population
Organism
It get's even more simple!
But no less complex...
Organisms
A single
living
form of life that can:
1. Respond to stimuli
2. Maintain HOMEOSTASIS (balance within the organism)
3. Reproduce and/or grow
4. Extract energy from food and eliminate waste products
What is structure?
The way something is made
What is function?
The job performed by
something
Many
structures
together form
systems
Systems
have different
functions
due to the parts that make up the system.
Remember in 6th grade...
Some organisms are
mulitcellular
, while others are
unicellular
.
Organisms can be
plants
,
animals
,
bacteria
, or
fungi
Some organisms are

complex

systems!
These systems can be broken down based on their structures:
1. Organ Systems
(biggest)
2. Organs
3. Tissues
4. Cells
(smallest)
1. Organ Systems
A group of organs working together to perform a specific function.
Examples:
Nervous System - controls the entire body's responses to stimuli
Example: Shoot System
Controls photosynthesis,
reproduction, hormone regulation, and transport of materials (xylem and phloem)
1. Organ Systems
2. Organs
Different types of
tissues that work
together .

Functions?
1. Organ Systems
2. Organs
3. Tissues
Similar cells doing a
single job
Examples: All Muscular tissue...but notice the difference in
structure
!
Functions
?

cardiac
skeletal
smooth
1. Organ Systems
2. Organs
3. Tissues
4. Cells -

MOST BASIC UNIT OF LIFE!!!

1. Extract energy from food and eliminate waste
2. Reproduce
3. Respond to stimuli
4. Maintain HOMEOSTASIS
Sound familiar?
According to

Cell Theory
, all living things are made of
cells
!
CELLS!
CELLS!
CELLS!
No matter the size...
It's all cells...
No matter the function...
If it's alive, it's made of cells...
Sound familiar?
