Whilst Hitler was in hospital, Germany surrendered and the war was over. This made him very angry because he wanted to win. Hitler rose to power in Germany because the country was in need of a new strong leader and Hitler was in the right place at the right time. Soon after he was made leader of Germany, Hitler invaded some countries in Europe. After the German army invaded Poland, WW2 was started.
After WW2 some countries were became communist because they thought it was a good new way to govern. One of these countries was Korea, but only North Korea had changed to communist and South Korea remained democratic. North Korea wanted all of Korea to be communist, so they invaded South Korea
VIETNAM WAR
.
The Vietnam War started in 1959 and went to 1975 and was fought in South and North Vietnam. The war had started because of communism. This war started very similar to the Korean War, the North was communist and the South was democratic. The North wanted the whole of Vietnam to be communist. America was involved in the war because they wanted to stop communism from spreading over Asia and other countries near by. This is because of the Domino Effect, countries in Asia had been falling to communism and it was spreading quickly. Australia also joined America in the war because of the fear of communism and their democratic beliefs. America and Australia have are allies and they fought together in both the world wars and in the Korean war. In the Vietnam war they both fought for the South. North Vietnam was backed by the Viet Cong and Russia.
In the Vietnam War both sides had to fight through the Vietnam jungles. This made it a lot harder and miserable. The jungles in Vietnam were very dense and humid and getting around the battlefield would have been painful for both sides.
Australia's Casualties in Vietnam War
After WW2 and the Korean War Australia developed a strong friendship with America. Australia and America had made an agreement that they would support each other in wars. When America became involved in the Vietnam War, Australia supported America.
Battle Of Long Tang
In May 1966 the Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR) arrived at an Australian base called Nui Dat in South Vietnam. They had found traces of the Viet Cong around the outskirts of their base, and had seen the Viet Cong run quickly between bushes. Soon a heavy downfall of rain came without warning and the Viet Cong had started firing from the bushes with machine guns, and mortar strikes. The Australians were fighting an enemy that they did not know the strengths of. These Australians that were know as D company and they were low on ammunition. The Australian soldiers felt that the enemy could see them perfectly clear and they could hardly see the enemy. They called helicopters to drop boxes of ammunition over them and blankets for the wounded. In the morning when A company and B company had arrived the Viet Cong had soon retreated into the jungle. It was estimated that there were at least 2,500 Viet Cong soldiers, about 250 of them were killed and there were signs of wounded being dragged back into the jungle. 18 Australians had been killed in action and 24 wounded. All but one of the 18 Australians that were killed were from D company
An contoversial event in the Vietnam War
In the Vietnam War cameras had became quite common. Much of the war was filmed and shown on TV in Australia and America. Public support for the war may have been much better without the information that the cameras filmed. After the war when the soldiers came home people abused them and were not very supportive because of what they had seen on the TV.
Many of the soldiers did not choose to go to war and It was very wrong of people to abuse them when they came home from a blood thirsty war and to treat them as villains not heroes. Using cameras in the war was difficult because many of the people did not know what to expect from the war, and got a shock when they saw footage on TV. If cameras were not used in the war the veterans would have been treated as heroes when they returned. The only kind of good thing from showing the war on TV was that people really saw what war is like for them selves and not told by others.
