Transcript of Valency and formulae

Aim
To know how to establish the valency of an ion or element
To know how to use the above to establish the formula of a compound
How???
Look at the periodic table:
Now:
The VALENCE of each element is the amount of 'HANDS' it uses to hold when making a bond with other elements. So when Oxygen bonds it uses _____'hands' and Hydrogen uses ___ so the formula of water is _____.
Cross over
What is the formula of aluminium Oxide?

Now watch the board and Mr Harvey

Starter
Formulas please!

Sodium Oxide
Potassium Carbonate
Boron Trifluoride
Carbon Monoxide
Iron (III) Bromide
Valencies
The chemical formula gives the number of atoms of each element in a molecule of a covalent substance:

Cl2 - 2 chlorine atoms

CO2- 1 carbon atom, 2 oxygen atoms

H2O- 2 hydrogen atoms, 1 oxygen atom

All atoms are bonded according to their valency .
