Stress is caused by many factors . . .
1.) School/Work

2.) Social and Relationship struggles within groups of friends and family

3.) Financial Struggles/Debt problems

4.) Major life changes

5.) Overworking/Being too busy
How much is too much ?
-In the right amounts stress can be beneficial. Stress can make you motivated, more efficient, have a better memory and even have a stronger immune system to fight disease.

-However stress can be unhealthy when you have too much of it.

Symptoms of having too much stress:
- Strange eating habits (eating too much or too little)
- Not getting enough sleep or frequently oversleeping
- Weakened immune response (constantly getting sick)
- Problems concentrating and memory loss
- Poor judgement
- Substance Abuse
- Feeling overwhelmed
- Procrastination
- Anxiety and Depression
Anxiety, Depression and Mental Illness Caused by Stress
Being overstressed can lead to anxiety, depression and mental illness if steps are not taken to reduce it.

Anxiety is not one disease, but rather a collection of six major disorders.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
causes frequent intense worrying that interferes with your everyday life.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
causes frequent repetitive behaviors that interfere with your daily life.

Panic Disorder (Anxiety Attacks)
causes you to suddenly feel overwhelmed, and extremely stressed and scared.

Social Anxiety Disorder
causes extreme shyness and worrying about normal social interactions.

Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
causes constant reliving of a stressful event such as war, death of a loved one, or surviving a disaster (survivor's guilt).

are the extreme fear of a specific thing. Common ones are Arachnophobia (the fear of spiders) and Acrophobia (the fear of heights).
Depression is an intense sadness characterized by many symptoms
Symptoms include:
- Loss of interest
- Withdrawal
- Problems concentrating
- Abnormal eating habits (gaining or losing 5% of body weight per month)
- Being easily irritated or angry
- Strange sleeping habits
- Self loathing
Ways to get help
When dealing with anxiety, depression, or other mental illness it is important to not suffer alone in silence. There are many organizations devoted to giving you help and advice, so you can recover and reenter society.
- Talk to friends and family
- Visit a counselor or social worker
- Receive advice from a psychiatrist
- Learn more about your condition and educate yourself on therapy after consulting your doctor
Stress Survey
We decided to take an anonymous poll from the class. We gave 20 students a short survey consisting of 4 questions:

1. Have you ever had to deal with stress?
2. What strategies do you use to relieve stress?
3.What do you find the most stressful?
4. Do you consider yourself overstressed?

Here are the results:
Question #1: Have you ever had to deal with stress?
100% of the students surveyed said they have had to deal with stress.
Question #2: What strategies do you use to relieve your stress?
Question #4: Do you feel overstressed?
Question #3: What do you find the most stressful?

Stress effects everyone differently, but generally stress is the feeling of pressure. You may feel uncertain, worried, nervous, or overwhelmed when in a stressful situation.
Stress is something everyone has to deal with. It can be affected by many factors and in small amounts can be beneficial. The optimal amount of stress can increase your efficiency, better your memory, and strengthen your immune system to allow you to better fight diseases. However, too much stress is unhealthy to both your body and mind. Luckily, stress is something you can handle when equipped with the right stress relieving strategies and a solid support system.
Stress Relieving Strategies
Start a stress journal
Do Yoga
Talk to friends and family (your support)
Listen to music
Take breaks
Watch T.V. or use other technology
Read, write, or draw
Get enough sleep
Eat well
Focus on what you need to do
Turn your nervous energy into excitement
Take deep breaths and put it in perspective
Manage your time and don't procrastinate

1. What strategies do you use to relieve stress?
"When I start to feel stressed, I use mindfulness exercises to keep myself calm and become more grounded. I have done some mindfulness training which is where you really try to focus in the moment and and take control of your thoughts. One of the exercises I use just has you focus on your breathing, letting all of your thoughts go so they don't become overwhelming.
Some other ways I relieve stress are: making art, running, walking my dog, and listening to music."
2. When do you feel the most stressed?
"I feel the most stressed when I have too many things going on at once and not enough time to really give my all to what I'm doing."
3. How do you feel when you're stressed?
"When I'm stressed I feel tense and my mind goes a million miles an hour. Sometimes I have trouble sleeping as well. As soon as I start to feel this way, I try to practice my mindfulness techniques so that I can slow my thoughts down and refocus."
4. Can you remember one event that caused you the most stress?
"Recently, I have been working on my master's degree so I have a lot of work due every week. On top of working full-time and spending time with my kids, trying to keep up with all of this school work has been causing me a lot of stress."
5. Is there anything you know about stress now that you wish you knew about stress in the past?
"That it is possible to manage it. You just have to recognize when you're feeling it and know what strategies work for you to help relieve it."
6. Do you ever feel overstressed?
"I used to, but now I have some strategies for stress management that really seem to work for me."
7. Is there any more advice you could give about managing stress to students experiencing it?
"If you're feeling really stressed, talk to someone about it. Keeping your feelings to yourself can really make things seem more overwhelming and unmanageable. Having someone to support you through it can provide a lot of relief and make you feel like you're not alone.
Also, for students experiencing stress, focus on one task at a time rather than thinking of all of the things you have to do as that's when you start to feel overwhelmed. Making lists, planning your time, and prioritizing tasks can be very helpful ways to manage student stress. Find something that you enjoy doing that helps you relax and make sure you find the time for it!"

In order to learn more about stress we interviewed multiple people on their experiences with stress.
Gary Reed- Olympian
During the Track and Field season we train with Gary, an 800m world class runner in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He has taught us a lot about using stress to your advantage and that in many ways stress is a sign that you want to do well.
1. Can you remember one event that caused you the most stress?
When I sat for my Royal College Medical Fellowship exams it was very stressful. I had to study and train for four years before I could challenge the oral examination. I had to travel to another city and be examined by two separate panels of judges. I knew that if I failed I would not be able to work as an anesthesiologist for at least another year until I could rechallenge the exam. Luckily, everything went well.
