Transcript of Space Race

HOW? In October 1957, the soviet union launched the first satellite- named sputnik- to be hurled into space. This 23 inch across round satellite was not harmful; it only sent meaningless messages back to earth. but it had an effect on the minds of many citizens and governments around the world. The reaction in the U.S. was astonished and a little scared, so in barely any time there was an "enemy satellite" flying across the United States. The space race had begun. WHY? Conquering outer space was very important. Both countries wanted to win to prove their scientific dominance and to show their military strength.
WHAT? The "Space Race" between the Soviet Union and the U.S.
was almost exactly what it sounds like- a race to claim outer space/the moon. This was very important to both countries. During this time period many satellites were launched, NASA was formed, and the tension between the Soviets and Americans grew hotter. WHEN? The space race started in 1957 when the Soviets first launched a satellite into space and lasted for over a decade after. SPUTNIK WHERE? The space race was happening in many different places. Only technoligies and satellites were in space until Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins (U.S. astronauts)landed on the moon, winning the space race. But before that, tension was growing in Russia, America, and the rest of the world. SPACE RACE
