New Year Date
The New Years date for Italy is December 31st
They celebrate the end of the old year
Begin the new year with fire works


Origins
They drop pans out of windows, following an old tradition of throwing out disused objects.
Dinner is eaten with family, then at 8:30 the president gives a national announcement.
At midnight they ring bells and eat a spoon of lentils for each ring.
In Vatican they have a live nativity scene in the streets.

They throw pots pans and clothes out the window to let go of the past.
They burn a christmas log to send away evil spirits.
The star of the dinner is lentils, symbolizing money and good fortune for the coming next year.
La Festa di San Silvestro is celebrated on December 31 ,New Year's Eve
They have a big feast where all their families and friends come to.
Pork is an important dish at their feast, because it symbolizes their richness in life.

They always wear brand new clothes and red underwear to bring good luck. Instead of wearing bright colors like we do here, they go for more black and white colored clothes.
Italians see giving gifts as showing love.
Most common gifts are candy, money, honey jars, and lamps.
They have gift baskets for sale around the time New Years

Tradition/Customs Continued
For entertainment at the parties they play tombola, which is similar to Bingo
Dancing before the fireworks at new year’s is traditional (they dance to pop or rock bands)
If in the coast you can hear boats or ships blowing their horns
Other celebrate by drinking wine, and watching the first sunrise of the new year
A very old custom is throwing out all your old belonging through your window, to show your ready for the new year
