Transcript of A Raisin In The Sun

A Raisin In The Sun Lorraine Hansberry What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore-
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over-
Like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
Like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?
-Langston Hughes, "Harlem" This poem can be interpreted as...Will your hard work pay off and make your dreams become a reality? Mama (Lena) Younger shows what it means to be a hard worker and have your dreams come true. " Seem like god didn't see fit to give the black man nothing but dreams but he did give us children to make them dreams seem worthwhile."
-Big Walter This quote implies how Mama shows what it means to be a hard worker and make your dreams become a reality. This quote implies to Mama as being a hard worker because she has the same values as Big Walter. They both believe that if you work hard, even if it gets tough at times, you can accomplish your dreams. "It makes a difference to a man when he can walk on floors that belong to him..."
-Mama This quote shows how Mama worked hard to achieve her dreams. Also she is trying to prove to Walter that it feels good when you accomplish your goals. This quote not only proves that you can accomplish your goals but it also shows the theme of the story, the american dream: ownership. " It's a plain little old house- but it's made good and solid-and it will be ours..."
-Mama The quote goes back to the big question, Will your hard work pay off and make your dreams into a reality? Mama shows how your hard work makes your dreams into a reality when she goes and buys a little house to call her own after many years of working hard to get the money to buy the house. "Sometimes you just got to know when to give up somethings... and hold on to what you got."
-Mama This quote shows how Mama is a hard worker but she also knows when there is nothing left that she can do so she will work hard on keeping what she has.
This quote has the literary element of irony, this is ironic because Mama never gives up and she always goes after her dreams and works hard to accomplish those dreams. The American Dream The american dream is ownership and being independent. Which is the basis for the story, A Raisin In The Sun. The american dream is ownership and independence because everyone wants to own a piece of land and be their own boss, and live their life the way they want to live it. " There is always something left to love..."
-Mama This quote ties into Mama being a hard worker because this is her way of saying you can't just give up on your dreams because the hard work you put in will always pay off. "...Like a rainbow after the rain." This quote applies to Mama because this shows how all her hard work trying to open Walter's eyes to the world around him and making him realize how proud his family is finally paid off. Walter has changed for the better just like she wanted him to. Will your hard work pay off and make your dreams into a reality? Mama worked hard to make her dreams into a reality to be able to get the key to her house that she bought. Her hard worked paid off and so will yours! They key to success is hard work!
