Suzanne Collins is the author of the Hunger Games trilogy. She was born August 10, 1962 in Hartford, CT. She is an American television writer and novelist. She currently lives in Sandy Hook with her husband, Cap Pryor, and two kids, Charlie and Isabel Pryor.
She is best known as the author of The Underland Chronicles and The Hunger Games trilogy. She graduated from Indiana University. Collins started her career by writing children's television. She then started writing books and became extremely famous.
Catching Fire is the second book from the Hunger Games trilogy. In the first book Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark both win the games, causing the start of rebellion throughout Panem. The two are just returning home as dual victors, but soon have to go on the victory tour. The 75th Annual Hunger Games, or Quarter Quell, is announced a while after. The special part of it, is that previous victors from each district have to return to the games. During the interviews before the games, Peeta announces that he and Katniss are married and that she is pregnant. When they go into the arena, they become allies with the tributes from district four, the girl from seven, and the tributes from three. After running into paralyzing fog in the jungle, they return to the beach part of the arena where they figure out that it is like a clock with different plague-like things at each area of the jungle at different times. Throughout the games, Katniss constantly finds areas where the force field surrounding the arena is located. Finally, at the end of the games she shot an arrow with wire wrapped around it at the visible square of the force field, right when the lightning striked the tree where the opposite side of the wire is attached. The force field is then blown up by the power of the electricity. The games aren't finished, leaving six tributes. Peeta along with two other tributes were taken up by the capitol. Katniss and two others were taken by a helicopter with Haymitch (her mentor) and some other people.
Katniss Everdeen is the main character of the story. She was one of the victors from the 74th Hunger Games, but has to return again. She is an amazing archer and family is one of her top priorities. She is very independent and often gets herself into trouble with the capitol.
Peeta Mellark is Katniss's partner in the games. He also won the 74th Hunger Games. He is an amazing artist and worked in a bakery before this life-changing experience. He has fallen in love with Katniss, which they have used as a strategy to survive throughout the trilogy. She eventually falls in love with him too.
Gale is Katniss's best friend from District 12. He works as a coal miner like most men in district twelve. He and Katniss always hunt together but one day he is out alone and gets caught by the new head peacekeeper. He is whipped in the center of the square. Katniss's mother heals him when they bring him to their house.
Haymitch Abernathy is a previous victor from district twelve in the 50th Hunger Games (second quarter quell), winning at age sixteen. He is also Katniss and Peeta's mentor in both the 74th and 75th Hunger Games. He is the town drunkard, but he helps Katniss with a lot of her problems. He has many strategies to help keep the two alive.
President Snow is the president of Panem. He doesn't believe Katniss and Peeta's love game, and fears uprisings in the districts. He tells Katniss that if she doesn't convince Panem of their love, he will kill and/or torture Gale, her family, and many other people close to her.
Primrose Everdeen is Katniss's little sister. She is thirteen years old. Katniss and Prim are very close. She is one of the people President Snow threatened to kill if Katniss couldn't convince him of her and Peeta's love.
Ms. Everdeen is Katniss's mother. She is district twelve's doctor in a way. She knows many recipes to make homemade medicines, creams, etc. After the new head peacekeeper comes, she is often busy trying to help heal people who were whipped or hurt in some way.
Mr. Everdeen is Katniss's father. He died a long time ago in a mining explosion. Katniss is often thinking or talking about him.
Effie Trinket is the lady who calls out the names at the reaping. She is in charge of the schedule for the team. Effie can often be extremely annoying, but is also very helpful.
Plutarch Heavensbee is the new Head Gamemaker. He dances with Katniss during the party in the capitol during the victory tour. There he tells her that he is secretly on her side since he has a watch with the mockingjay on it.
Venia are all Katniss's stylists for the Hunger Games. Portia is one of Peeta's.
Cinna is Katniss's main stylist/designer. In Catching Fire, Katniss is ordered to wear her wedding dress for the interviews with Caesar Flickerman. Cinna secretly transforms it into a black dress with wings to show her as a mockingjay when she twirls. Right before Katniss goes into the arena, peacekeepers come into her releasing area and beat up Cinna, taking him out.
Caesar Flickerman is the man in charge of interviewing each tribute the night before the Hunger Games.
Annie Cresta was a previous victor who has gone crazy. She is the girl Finnick Odair is in love with.
Maysilee Donner was the girl tribute in the 50th Hunger Games with Haymitch Abernathy. Sadly, she didn't survive. She was also one of Ms. Everdeen's best friends.
Bonnie and Twill meet Katniss in the woods. They escaped district eight after the uprising. They also tell Katniss about district 13.
Madge Undersee is Governer Undersee's daughter, and Katniss's friend. She was the one who gave her the mockingjay pin in The Hunger Games.
Greasey Sae worked in The Hobb selling soup. Katniss would often give her game she killed or money. Her shop was burnt down by the peacekeepers.
Hazelle is Gale's mother. Katniss gives her money all of the time so they can buy food to survive.
Romulus Thread is the new Head Peacekeeper in District 12. He is the one who whipped Gale.
Darius was an old peacekeeper. He was a friend of Gale and Katniss. When Gale was being whipped, Darius tried to stop Thread but he was knocked out. He was later turned into an avox (they cut out his tongue) and had to serve Katniss and Peeta.
Purnia is the peacekeeper who finally stops Thread's whipping Gale. Purnia lied to Thread and convinced him to decrease Gale's number of lashes, saying that it was Gale's first offence.
The book states that there was an alliance formed before the games. The alliance was said to have consisted of tributes who were trying to keep Katniss alive.

Katniss and Peeta's allies were Finnick, Mags, Johanna, Beetee, and Wiress. Their enemies were Brutus, Enobaria, Gloss and Cashmere.
The districts for who I didn't name the tributes did not have a main part and their names were not mentioned anywhere in the book.
The text describes Finnick Odair as being, "Tall, athletic, with golden skin and bronze-colored hair, and sea-green eyes." pg. 267
This is Katniss's mockingjay pin. It is used as the sign of rebellion in Panem. Little does she know, almost everyone has it... including the Head Gamemaker.

All of a sudden Katniss hears a trigger behind her while she's in the woods. She instinctively puts an arrow on her bow and thinks, "Perhaps they have orders to bring me in alive so they can torture me into incriminating every person I ever knew. My fingers have all but decided to release the arrow when I see the object in the glove. It's a small white circle of flat bread. More of a cracker, really. Gray and soggy around the edges. But an image is clearly stamped in the center of it...
It's my mockingjay. (pg. 176)
