WORD STRESS, SENTENCE STRESS AND RHYTHM
What is word stress?
All words of more than one syllable have what is called word stress.

This means that at least one of the syllables is l o n g e r and louder than the other syllables

For example: TEACHer, JaPAN, CHINa, aBOVE, converSAtion, INteresting, imPORtant, deMAND, etCETera

One word has only one stress - We can only stress vowels, not consonants.
What is sentence stress?
Sentence stress is what gives English its rhythm or "beat".

Sentence stress is accent on certain words within a sentence.

For example: Will you SELL my CAR because I've GONE to FRANCE?

Rhythm
Why is the sentence stress important for pronunciation?

Because it adds "music" to the language. It is the rhythm of the English language. It changes the speed at which we speak (and listen to) the language. The time between each stressed word is the same.
Basic rules for sentence stress
1. content words are stressed (Words carrying the meaning - car, sell, red, quickly, never)

2. structure words are unstressed ( Words for correct grammar - pronouns, prepositions, articles, conjuctions, auxiliary verbs)

3. the time between stressed words is always the same

NOTE: sometimes we can stress a word that would normally be only a structure word, for example to correct information
