Point of View
What is thepoint of view?
Example: Conner, Adrian, and I are going to the after school party. We plan to take pictures in the phone booth. I am super excited and happy! I wonder what Adrian and Conner think.
What is the point of view?
Sean was excited to see Maria at school. He felt his heart pounding as he walked to his first class because he know he was going to see her.
As Sean walked in Maria felt butterflies in her stomach. She wanted Sean to hurry and sit next to her. They both felt a surge of excitement to see each other.
Third-person omniscient
Third-person limited
The narrator knows everything that is happening.
The narrator knows every character's thoughts/feelings.
Narrator IS NOT a character in the story.

The tone is depressed and lonely. Melinda at this point in the story no longer has any friends, the whole school is avoiding her, and she has no one that she feels comfortable talking to. This causes her to become lonely because she is afraid to tell people what happened to her and begins to think that what happened to her might have been her own fault.
What is the tone of this passage?
There was a steaming in all the hollows, and it had roamed in its forlornness up the hill, like an evil spirit, seeking rest and finding none. A clammy and intensely cold mist, it made its slow way through the air in ripples that visibly followed and overspread one another, as the waves of an unwholesome sea might do. - A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickinson
The tone of the passage is
Both of these tones support that something unknown or strange is about to occur.
-The writer's style, or the distinct words and thought patterns of a first-person narrator.
-Makes their writing unique.
-Can portray the author's personality, character, and perspective on the world.
- Usually not shown on purpose
- Shown through word choice, sentence structure, dialogue, and character development.
"I once believed that life was a gift. I thought whatever I wanted I would someday possess. Is that greed, or only youth? Is it hope or stupidity? As far as I was concerned the future was a book I could write to suit myself, chapter after chapter of good fortune," -Green Angel by Alice Hoffman.
Voice Practice
Which sentence/sentences show the most voice?:
A. The cat, sleepily purring, sat on the mat by the fireplace.

B. There were dozens that came to the party that night.

C. There was absolutely nothing that was going to stop them from winning their medal. Which they deserved, of course.

D. The book was old and incredibly worn, and had a brown cover with gold edges.
This is how a writer expresses his or her attitude towards the subject.
Steps to find tone:
1. Pay attention to dictation, or how the words are pronounced.
2. Look at the imagery because it shows what the character is thinking/feeling about what happened.
3. Pay attention to the details.
4. Listen to the language used because the words may mean more than their literal definition.
5.Break down the sentence structure because the writer may change sentence structure to show tone and make a pattern that the reader can see.

At dawn, Chris set out on his horse for the wood at the edge of the village of Treegap. He was going there, as he did once every ten years, to meet his two sons, Nick and Desmond, and he was feeling at ease.

We will read the passages.
You will determine the point of view.
Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
Write at least one sentence explaining your answer.

You are a mountain climber. Three years ago you spent the summer at a climbing school in the mountains of Colorado. Your instructors said that you had natural skills as a climber. You made rapid progress and by the end of the summer you were leading difficult rock and ice climbs.

I witnessed the kidnapping of Kaley Angelica Pacheco. Well, me and the twenty-three other people in first period language arts class at Tecumseh Junior high.
Unlike everybody else, however, I actually did something to try and stop it. Well, sort of. I went, “Jazmin, what are you doing?”
Jazmin just rolled her eyes. She was all, “Relax, Griffin. It’s a joke, okay?”

Ariel sat in front of Aaron. She had two long, brown pigtails that reached all the way down to her waist. Aaron saw those pigtails, and a terrible urge came over him. He wanted to pull a pigtail. He wanted to wrap his fist around it, feel the hair between his fingers, and just yank. He thought it would be fun to tie the pigtails together, or better yet, tie them to her chair.

It all began when Ms. Frizzle showed our class a film strip about the human body. We knew trouble was about to start, because we knew Ms. Frizzle was the strangest teacher in the school.

Shyanne took the arm of her hostess, but Emily lagged behind. When at last she rejoined Jordan and Shyanne in the hall, She found them talking earnestly about the condition of the people, and how to make them more happy and contented– although they were already the happiest and most contented folks in all the world. This interested Shyanne, of course, but it didn’t interest Emily very much, so the little girl ran over to the big table on which was lying open Jordan’s Great Book of Records.

Caden knelt in a bed of trampled reed grass and scanned the tracks with a practiced eye. The prints told him that the deer had been in the meadow only a half hour before. Soon they would bed down. His target, a small doe with a pronounced limp in her left forefoot, was still in the herd. He was amazed she had made it so far without a wolf or a bear catching her.

Once you have your grill assembled, the next thing to decide is where to put it. A grill puts out a lot of heat, so you should position it several feet away from the side of the house or any plants or shrubbery. You'll have an easier time with a spot that is sheltered from the wind. When positioning a grill on a wooden deck, remember that sparks and live embers can fall from a charcoal grill.

It's your turn now! You will create your own story about these characters! You must have an exposition, rising action, conflict, climax, falling action, and a resolution. You will also be given a POV to follow!
We will write it in the writers notebook and then type it out!
Let's get started!

1. Create a plot diagram.
2. Begin writing your
first paragraph (Exposition = setting and characters).
Make it very vivid.
Describe what the setting looks like, smells like, what you hear, what it feels like, and so one.
Introduce a character.
What does the character look like, sound like, act like, and what do others think about them.

2. Understand what you need to look for when proofing.
3. Pick a person to work with.
4. Trade papers and check the introduction.
Once you are done go back to your seat.
Second Paragraph
This consists of your rising action, conflict, and climax!
Now you will begin your second paragraph. In this paragraph you must have at least 3 rising actions, a conflict, and then a climax!
First type your Exposition. Then type your rising action, conflict, and climax.
Last paragraph
This consists of your falling action and resolution!
Now you will begin your third paragraph. In this paragraph you must have at least 2 falling actions and a resolution.
Grab a laptop, log in, and begin typing!!
Once you are all finished print it up and peer edit with someone else! Use the back of the rubric to guide you! You must answer all the peer editing questions to earn points! Then go back make changes and print your final copy!

Double space your story.
Font size must be 12 point, Times New Roman or Arial.
