Defining Social Media
Collaborative projects enable the joint and simultaneous creation of content by many users.
The main objective of content communities is the sharing of media content between users. Almost always the content is created and generated by users themselves.
SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES
Applications that enable users to connect by creating personal information profiles, inviting friends and colleagues to have access to those profiles, and sending emails and instant messages between each other.
INTERNAL SOCIAL NETWORKS
Social games are anything involving more than player. So online games on Facebook, to mobile games on phones, to Massively Multiplayer Online Games with 100,000 + players.
Companies and organizations are starting to use social network functionality for internal processes, productivity and communication. These internal social networks have a high level of engagement similar to external social media networks.

Scott' Talan's 9 Species of Social Media
Blogs are usually managed by one person only, but provide the possibility of interaction with others though the addition of comments.
Crowdsourcing seeks services, monies, ideas and/or content by asking people for contributions. These individuals are not officially associated, or even known, by the person/organization asking for help. The call for assistance is made online and (usually) open to anyone.
Yes. Email is social. Even just 2 people emailing. But with email marketing, newsletters, lists it really is social.
Social Media is Not New
Humans are social beings. Media has been around since cave paintings. Martin Luther's pamphlets went viral. In Victorian England newspapers were like blogs. This all continues...
"An element of a culture or system of behavior passed from one individual to another by imitation or other.... means such as an image, video, piece of text, etc., that is copied and spread rapidly by Internet users, often with slight variations." -OED
