Transcript of Siafu

Siafu Colonies can contain twenty million ants. One single colony can ravage the African countryside obliterating everything in their path. Much like the grasshoppers during the Dust Bowl. When food shortages present themselves, the colony as a whole will march through whatever happens to be in its path in order to acquire sustenance. Though not difficult to avoid, the very young or elderly can find themselves victims of asphyxiation and 20-50 die each year as well as thousands of dollars in foodstuffs damage yearly. Siafu can be compared to our red fire ants, except our fire ants rely more on their stingers than their pinches and are not deadly. Ants in general are typically closely rated to bees and wasps. Common Names: Dorylus, also known as driver ants, safari ants, or siafu, which is what the natives call them.
Classification:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Hymenoptera
Family: Formicidae
Genus: Dorylus
Species: Over 60 different ones, but I mainly focused on the species nigricans.
Location: Africa and tropical Asia Works cited:

Soldiers are almost three times that size.
The queen resembles a large ant with an enormous abdomen. She can be up to 5cm long, which is the largest ant in the world.
Males are winged and are about 3cm long.

Their bite is severely painful, each soldier leaving two puncture wounds when removed. Removal is difficult, because their jaws are extremely strong. Large numbers of ants can kill small or immobilized animals and eat the flesh. Specific Characteristics A very large head
Pincer-like mandibles.
Most have no eye sockets, and the speices that do have eyes as decoration, are still 50% blind too.
Large adomen on queen ant
Wings on the males who are not part of the colonies.
Six legs
Segmented midsection
Capable of stinging for defense Reproduction All of the ants in the colony are female. There are male siafu ants, but they spend their lives flying around, (yes the male ants can FLY) searching for other colonies to reproduce with. Only one of the female ants, the queen, is responsible for breeding. The queen can live for nearly 28 years. She lays 1-2 million eggs every month, almost continuously. The males fly around until they find a highway of traveling ants, and once they find them, they land and the soldier ants rip the wings off of the ant and carry him to the queen where he is used as a sperm donor until he dies or is no longer fertil. Lets just take a moment to think what it would be like if humans were like this. Issues caused by these Colonies Why are these ants so protective and aggressive? They are blind. They rely on touch, smell and chemical signals from the abdomen of the leading ants. It's sort of like a protective measure. Instead of being wearklings and hiding from the predator they can't see, they simply kill or devour everything in their path, before it can kill them. I'm also sure if we were blind we wouldn't want humans touching us, so their instinct is to bite and rip flesh off us to tell us to leave them alone. They hunt by swarming. They can dismember up to 100,000 prey animals in a single raid. Their favorite and main delicacy is earthworms.
